Kaieteur Sports – Another spirited performance by the Junior Lady Jags was not enough to keep Honduras from regaining the lead in Group D when the 2026 Concacaf Women’s Under-17 Qualifiers continued on Saturday at the Guillermo Prospero Trinidad Stadium in Oranjestad, Aruba.
Honduras were able to secure a 3 – 1 victory over Guyana to extend their unbeaten run and elevate their points tally to nine (9). Jamaica is second once again with seven (7) points while Guyana remains of four (4) points. The other two teams in the Group, Aruba and St. Vincent and the Grenadines, were both without points before the encounter against each other last night.
Now, just one match remains for every team in the Group except Aruba. The top two teams in the Group face off at 20:00 hrs on Monday, February 2, after Guyana battle St. Vincent and the Grenadines earlier in the day at 15:00 hrs.
A win for Guyana means they will match the Jamaicans’ points, but must hope the mighty Honduras squad defeat the Reggae Girls and restrict their goal scoring. However, Guyana must record a clean sheet result in that final match with a score no lower than 8 – 0 to beat Jamaica’s goal difference of 7.
With that, Guyana must then hope they are among the top two second place finishers to advance to the next round. Only the six Group winners (A, B, C, D, E and F) and the best two second-place finishers will advance to the Concacaf Women’s Under-17 Qualifiers Final Round.
Meanwhile, Saturday’s match saw Honduras put Guyana under early pressure with a goal in the 7th minute when Honduras’ Ilsy Sevilla found the top left corner from a free kick. The Jags did well in their search for an equaliser but found themselves down by two goals on the brink of half time, compliments of a header from Jazlyn Sánchez near goal.
Resuming with a 2 – 0 lead, two minutes into the second half Valentina Chavarria added more misery to the Guyanese outfit when she found the back of the net. With the victory beyond doubt, Honduras proceeded with the comfort of a three-goal cushion but had their clean sheet ruined by Anaya Joseph, who recorded a consolation goal in the 87th minute.
Guyana’s U17 Squad: Jasmine Solomon-Ross (GK), Alexis Mars (GK), Sara Ernest (GK), Aliyah John, Ella Yhip, Kuleni Springer, Lily Biffin, Avril Pasvolsky, Laila Ross, Laila So, Caraleena Elliston, Sydney Glean, Kimora Edwards, Arianna Chin, Carissa Lombardi, Ellie Biffin, Ayah Stewart, Alexaudria Chasles, Tanya De Vair, Anaya Joseph and Eleanna Isaacs.
