Tribute to Bollywood legends, Rafi, Mukesh and Kishore

We would like to inform readers that the Indian Action Committee (IAC) on Sunday, July 31, will be holding an “Evening of Entertainment”, which includes a tribute to the late legendary Bollywood playback singers, Mohammed Rafi, Mukesh Chand Matthur and Kishore Kumar at the National Cultural Centre. The date makes the 36th death anniversary of Rafi who passed away in 1980. Mukesh died on August 27, 1976 and Kishore on October 13, 1987.
Considered three of the greatest singers from India, they made immeasurable contributions to Indian music through thousands of songs and with a large following even now across the globe. In Guyana they continue to be household names and their music immensely popular. Following his death in 1980, local Rafi, Mukesh and Kishore singing competitions were introduced as fans found ways to honour the memories of these stalwarts.
The IAC, in its continuous efforts to aid in the preservation of Indian culture, has over the years held simple events to honour these singers. It believes that the treasure of music they gifted the world is irreplaceable and timeless and must be preserved. Music is an integral part of culture and it is in this context that the “Evening of Entertainment” is being held. A number of local singers will be paying homage to these legends while the Nrytya Dance troupe led by Roshini Boodhoo will perform relevant dances.
In addition to the tribute, the show also includes as a bonus, the comedy “Choti Backoo” spoofing the title of the popular Indian Soap, “Choti Bahu”. It’s a hilarious exchange between the old and young generations that will leave the audience in stitches from laughter.
Written and Directed by Neaz Subhan, winner of the Best Playwright Prize in 2013 for “When Chocolate Melts”, it stars Michael Ignatius, Chris Gopaul, Romel Edmondson, NirmalaNarine, Narda Mohamed and Paul Budhna.
