Jul 17, 2016 Letters
Dear Editor;
Please refer to a letter which appeared in your newspaper issue of Saturday July 16, 2016: “The Town Clerk believes he is the law”. Mark Roopan is at it again writing on matters he has very little knowledge about. This is demonstrated by his utterances, in this and other letters. No Mark Roopan, the Town Clerk does not believe he is the law as you supposed. Rather the Town Clerk is acting on a statutory obligation to enforce compliance to the laws and by laws of the Municipal and District Councils Act Chapter 28:01. It is an important function of the City Council as a regulatory body; we have no other option. And yes, part of this responsibility is to ensure that all, including businesses, pay their fair share and make their contributions to protect and preserve the City of Georgetown.
Frankly, judging from Mark Roopan’s statements he appears to be an individual, who cares little or nothing about the condition of our City. If he did then he would know that it takes substantial amounts of money to sustainably develop this national Capital. Perhaps, Mark Roopan feels more comfortable living in a disorganized, filthy City—the exact physical condition of Georgetown about twelve months ago. During that period, there was no Mark Roopan to speak about law because there was very little enforcement of our by-laws; there was, and still is, in certain parts, a high level of indiscipline and lawlessness. One wonders how it is possible for individuals such as Roopan, to speak so dismissively of the efforts of this City Council to restore Georgetown and the justified need for money, apparently without any sense of shame.
However, we wish to remind Mark Roopan that we are on a mission to make Georgetown the cleanest and greenest City of the Caribbean. He can write all he wants, we are confident that, this city will be transformed; it will be clean, and there will be law and order. We will not stop until this is achieved because we are determined to leave a good legacy of a sustainably clean, safe and healthy Georgetown for the next generation. We will achieve our mission regardless of degrees of difficulties.
