Dear Editor,
The recent videos posted by the leader of the opposition show claims of the amassing of wealth by Irfaan Ali beyond his legal means, claims of the awarding of overpriced construction contracts to close friends and family members of Ministers and the First Lady. This should remind all Guyanese of concerns previously raised when Forbes Burnham was leading our Nation. Ali may not be linked to the rigging of elections, but the level of corruption claimed by the leader of the opposition is far beyond what was alleged during Burnham’s time in office. It is now unclear which of these two leaders has been worse for our country while in office. The depletion of the natural resource fund (NRF) has been so extensive that even the allegations previously raised against the former “fat boy” seem minuscule in comparison.
The problem is that after the squandering of these funds to enable the alleged filling of close friends and family members’ pockets the Ali administration would have wasted a once in a lifetime opportunity to improve the lives of all Guyanese for the long term. They have literally and figuratively rocked the boat so much that it has tipped over leaving many Guyanese to die while they allegedly enrich themselves. And who suffers the most? Our first people the Amerindians. The polluted land left behind from irresponsible undertakings in the mining sector will cause immense harm, especially if we allow the Ali administration to mine for uranium.
The opportunity to lay a strong foundation for our nation to build upon is also being wasted due to others using this same opportunity to enrich themselves at the expense of their fellow citizens. Local Government Elections have been delayed because of the negative impact of the recent tragedy and the revelations / allegations of extensive corruption involving senior officials in the government. A clear indication that things are not going well for the PPP. They are also treating the NRF as though it were their personal bank account, unilaterally changing the withdrawal rules to accelerate its depletion and now they are protecting those who control how most of the funds are spent on development. Edgehill’s resignation has not been requested by Irfaan even though global precedent requires it.
It should now be obvious to every Guyanese man, woman, and child that based on the evidence provided by the leader of the opposition the current administration is no longer administering the country for the benefit of our citizens and Guyanese businesses. The foolishness has become so extensive that they are even giving away our El Dorado after it has been proven that the value of gold only goes up over the long term. Now the benefits from the gold mining that should be harnessed to strengthen the buying power of our Guyanese dollar have been gifted for pennies on the dollar to the Canadians, Australians, and other foreign interests who we continue to buy goods from. Making it more expensive for us to purchase instead of making it cheaper for us to develop the housing and construction sectors which depend heavily on imports. The buffoonery / foolishness has reached such a high level that this cabal (a small secret group that plans and plots to gain more power) will be remembered as the group that was taking Guyana to its ruin.
Having the government venture into private sector businesses where lucrative opportunities exist is further testament to the Ali cabal’s intentions to take over the best money-making opportunities that arise. Ali and his regime are proving themselves to be bad for business, bad for safety and bad for the future of all Guyanese. We must demand that local government elections be held as soon as possible, and we must vote them out! If the good Doctor and his esteemed wife were around, they would probably refer to Ali and his cabal as enemies of the state. Based on the allegations and evidence presented, what we appear to be witnessing now is an attempt at “State Capture” by the Ali administration. Guyana does not belong to them it belongs to all Guyanese! We stopped Burnham’s attempt at State Capture it is now time to stop others who try.
With utmost concern,
Jamil Changlee
