Dear Editor,
The continuation of the war in Ukraine is deeply troubling. According to conservative estimates, over a million lives have been lost so far from both sides. The so-called “Special Military Operation” launched by Russia which was projected to last for two weeks is now in its 5th year with no end in sight.
Meanwhile, the killing arithmetic continues unabated with both sides trying as best as possible to inflict maximum damage on each other with a view to secure battlefield advantage with no regard for human lives. One significant development has been the use of military drones by Ukraine which is reaching deep into Russian territory including Moscow. A number of strategic buildings and energy infrastructure were destroyed including the popular retail giant Blueberries which reportedly has been supplying the Russian military with arms and ammunition. The Russian military has also been using drones and ballistic missiles to inflict damage on Ukraine resulting in numerous civilian deaths, including women and children.
This is indeed a man-made tragedy in the very heart of Europe which could have been avoided had better sense prevailed. It is clear that the decision to invade Ukraine was not only ill-advised but hastily done without due regard to the norms of international law and respect for territorial integrity. Never since World War 2 has there been so much death and destruction. The consequences for both countries are dire and will only get worse unless both countries agree to a peaceful and negotiated resolution. The threat of a nuclear war has never been closer. The international community can do more to end this brutal war, especially China, the United States and the BRICS countries. History will not be kind to those who stood on the sidelines and allow the killing machines to continue along a deadly trajectory.
It is time to bring this senseless war to an end. Yes to peace, no to war!
Regards
Hydar Ally
