Members of the Waramadong Dance Troupe sit in the stand as they await their entry on to the field to entertain the fans and visitors last Sunday.
The Region 7 community of Waramadong hosted one game in this year’s Digicel Schools Football Championship last Sunday and what was witnessed was another fine exhibition of the host putting on a pleasing show for the fans and visitors.
The host, as many of the Amerindian communities have done over the duration of the competition, once more proved that they are worthy of being given the opportunity to stage more matches in the annual event.
Kaieteur Sport visited the community and spoke with some of the residents and what was gathered was that they are yearning to be presented with more opportunities to showcase their ability to be good hosts as well as the abundant talent that reside within their respective communities in certain sports.
DC Caesar Fox (formerly Waramadong) has been a regular feature in all six editions of the championship to date and their performance against Paruima gave early evidence of their ability to go all the way this time, having lost in the final on three previous occasions, while bowing out in the semi-finals twice.
Speaking with Sherlan Peters, one of the dancers who entertained the supportive audience that converged on the ground to view the game, she expressed optimism of D C Caesar Fox winning the match which they did, but also made a plea to Digicel to bring more activities to her community.
“I think that this game will be a big one and D C Caesar Fox will be the winning team this year, they will reach the final and win the championship,” she happily related.
Asked about her presence at the ground, she said they were there to perform a dance as part of the entertainment aspect, but more importantly to support the boys. Peters added that she felt excited and confident and glad that Digicel saw it fit to arrange for the game to be played in her community, before reiterating her petition for the cellular company to bring more activities to Waramadong.
The same call has been repeated in other hinterland communities and while Digicel has been a driving force in this area, much more support is needed from other corporate entities to eliminate or perhaps minimize the scourge of deviant behaviour in those areas.
