Wales plant to deliver electricity by December 2026 – Contractor tells Jamaica PM
(Kaieteur News) – Lindsayca Guyana Inc., the contractor hired to deliver phase one of the Gas-to-Energy (GTE) project, on Thursday informed Jamaican Prime Minister, Andrew Holness that construction activities are ongoing round-the-clock to ensure power generation by the end of 2026.
The project was initially intended to startup at the end of 2024 but has faced significant delays due to the soil at Wales, West Bank Demerara.
Prime Minister Holness was on an official state visit to Guyana between June 25 and June 26, Guyana’s Office of the Prime Minister reported.

The Department of Public Information (DPI) reported that engineers are now preparing to introduce natural gas into the system and are working around the clock to deliver electricity to the national grid by December 2026.
Lindsayca’s Project Manager, Luis Pirela detailed the components of the project, highlighting that the facility is designed to receive natural gas and separate it into different components to maximise value for Guyana.
Methane is the primary gas component that will be used to fuel power generation and supply electricity to homes and businesses.
Pirela explained, “The facility separates the molecules and extracts methane, which is then sent to the power generation system as fuel”.
Beyond power generation, the GTE project will also position Guyana as an exporter of cooking gas, with other by-products such as plastic and glass being explored.
The project manager pointed to the collaboration between Guyana and at least 20 countries across Europe, Asia and the Americas for the importation of key equipment and expertise to develop the flagship project. “This facility is the result of integrating engineering and equipment from around the world,” he noted.
Pirela said that the international collaboration allowed the engineering teams to deliver the project within an accelerated timeframe.
DPI said he further revealed that the current construction works represent the second phase of development.
“The plant is being designed with operational flexibility, allowing it to run initially in a simple-cycle mode and later transition into a combined-cycle system that captures hot exhaust gases to produce additional electricity more efficiently,” the report stated.
The second phase of construction activities is expected to conclude within the next three months, after which the turbines will be fully assembled. To this end, Pirela emphasised that, “The target is to start power generation in December 2026.”
The project manager told the visiting delegation that the contractor is working around the clock to ensure it meets the year-end deadline. “We’re working 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including holidays, to make sure this is achievable and to deliver power generation for Guyana,” he assured.
The gas processing facility is initially designed to handle 50 million standard cubic feet of gas per day, with infrastructure already installed to expand capacity to 120 million standard cubic feet daily in the future.
“Pirela said the site is now technically prepared for gas introduction, with commissioning activities advancing,” according to the DPI.
The project manager said, “We’re ready for introducing gas and supporting the commissioning teams, with the hope of introducing gas later this year”.
The GTE project aims to slash electricity bills by a generous 50% once completed.
