YBG confirms venue shift as NSBF tips off June 28

Kaieteur Sports – With the countdown to tip-off underway, Youth Basketball Guyana (YBG) has been forced to make a late venue adjustment ahead of the 19th Annual KFC National Schools Basketball Festival (NSBF) after ongoing rehabilitation works rendered the originally designated facility unavailable.
In a statement issued by YBG Co-Director Chris Bowman, the organisation assured stakeholders that all logistical arrangements remain unchanged, with the exception of the venue for the opening phase of the tournament.

The adjustment comes as the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall continues the installation of newly acquired bucket seating, preventing the facility from hosting the tournament’s opening ceremony and preliminary rounds.
“The opening ceremony and initial rounds of competition will now be held at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue, Georgetown, due to ongoing works at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall,” the release stated.
Despite the setback, organisers remain optimistic that the refurbished venue will be ready in time to host the tournament’s climax.
“We anticipate that the Finals and Closing Ceremony on Sunday, July 5, 2026, will be held at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, subject to the completion of the ongoing works,” the release further noted.
YBG emphasized that the venue adjustment affects only the location of the opening segment of the festival, with all dates, schedules and activities remaining intact.
The prestigious school’s championship is scheduled to run from June 28 to July 5 and will feature four divisions: Girls Under-16, Boys Under-14, Boys Under-16 and Boys Under-18. Action is set to begin from 13:00hrs on Sunday at the National Gymnasium.
The Girls Under-16 championship is expected to be fiercely contested, with six schools battling for national honours. Among the challengers are President’s College, Queen’s College, Marian Academy, Tutorial Academy (Berbice champions), J.C. Chandisingh Secondary and Hururu Secondary.
Meanwhile, the boys’ divisions promise another thrilling showcase of school basketball talent. Schools such as The Bishops’ High School, St. Stanislaus College, St. Joseph High School, New Amsterdam Multilateral Secondary, Good Hope Secondary, President’s College, Kwakwani Secondary, Line Path Secondary, St. Ignatius Secondary and West Demerara Secondary are among those expected to compete for championship glory.
Preliminary matches will be contested from June 28 to July 2, with the semifinal round slated for July 4 and the championship finals scheduled for July 5.
