Kaieteur Sports – Given a second opportunity to secure promotion to the 2026/27 Elite League, Timehri United saw their hopes dashed on Wednesday evening after suffering a 2-0 defeat to former champions Fruta Conquerors FC in the Elite League Qualifiers playoff at the National Training Centre, Providence.

With their top-flight status on the line following relegation concerns from the 2026/2027 campaign, Fruta Conquerors delivered a composed performance, producing two second-half goals to secure victory and retain their place in Guyana’s premier football competition.

The Georgetown-based club entered the encounter determined to erase any lingering doubts about their Elite League future and responded with a resolute display against an ambitious Timehri United side.

For Timehri, the defeat marked a disappointing end to their qualification journey after they had already fallen 2-0 to Camptown FC in Sunday’s playoff final.

Fruta Conquerors FC outlasted Timehri United in important Qualifier matchup, following second half goals from Codrington and Walton.

While Timehri United was seeking redemption and a route back into contention, Fruta Conquerors approached the contest knowing their Elite League survival depended on the result. After enduring a below-par Season Seven campaign, the former champions rose to the occasion when it mattered most.

The opening half proved to be a tightly contested affair, with both sides battling for control but unable to find a breakthrough. Fruta Conquerors eventually broke the deadlock in the 56th minute when Jamal Codrington found the back of the net, giving his side a crucial advantage shortly after the restart.

Conquerors came to conquer! Jamal Codrington and Stefon Walton came through for Fruta Conquerors on Wednesday evening, netting individual goals to help keep Elite League status intact.

As Timehri pushed forward in search of an equaliser, Fruta Conquerors remained organised defensively and capitalised on their opportunities. Stefon Walton put the result beyond doubt in the 82nd minute, slotting home the insurance goal to seal a 2-0 victory and confirm the club’s participation in Elite League Season Eight.

Following the match, Fruta Conquerors Head Coach Jersild Wright credited his players’ commitment and the tactical adjustments made at halftime for the important victory.

“The playoff game was an important matchup for both teams. Timehri played well. It was a very hard-fought victory for us, but the boys committed themselves and worked hard for the result. At halftime, we went into the dressing room, discussed a few pointers, where we wanted to improve, and the players executed the plan in the second half. We are pleased everything came together and that we were able to come away with a 2-0 victory tonight,” Wright said.

With their Elite League status retained, Fruta Conquerors will now shift their focus to preparations for Season Eight. The club will look to build on its rich legacy while continuing its commitment to competitive excellence, community engagement, and the ongoing development of football in Guyana.
