GFF/NAMILCO Thunderbolt Flour Power Nat. U-17….
Matches in the GFF/NAMILCO Thunderbolt Flour Power National U-17 football tournament in the Ancient County continued last weekend on the West Coast Berbice and in New Amsterdam which saw Corriverton Links
recording their second win in as many matches, while there were opening wins for Cougars, Rosignol United and Paradise Invaders.
Paradise Invaders clipped the wings of Mahaicony Thunder Hawks 4-0 on Saturday and on Sunday; 10-man Rosignol United edged Hopetown United Rangers 2-1.
Over at the Burnham Park in New Amsterdam, Cougars FC defeated Canefield Diamond Strikers 7-4 on Saturday, while on Sunday, Corriverton Links whipped Litchfield Nuggets 8-2 and Monedderlust failed to show up for the second consecutive week for their encounter with New Amsterdam United. The Berbice Football Association says it will be investigating why Monedderlust has not showed up to date.
Playing at the Mahaicony Sports Ground, Paradise Invaders’ opening goal against Mahaicony Thunder Hawks was scored by the latter themselves in the 4th minute which gave the winners the required momentum to launch their victory bid.
Nial Reynolds followed up with a double of his own in the 12th and 47th minute, while the other goal came off the boot of Gladwin Humphrey in the 64th minute to seal Paradise’s 4-0 triumph; their quickness was too much for the Mahaicony lads to contain.
On Sunday at the same venue, 10-man Rosignol United found enough energy to get past Hopetown United Rangers in an exciting clash. Isaiah James netted both goals for Rosignol in the 22nd and 45th minute; Hopetown’s consolation strike came off the boot of Telston Miller in the 40th minute.
At Burnham Park on Saturday, Cougars roared to a comfortable 7-4 come from behind win over Canefield Diamond Strikers FC despite the latter putting up a spirited fight.
Canefield Diamond Strikers had taken the lead after just two minutes when Alade Grant rocked the nets but in the next 20 minutes of play, Canefield were subjected to the Shane Hamilton show as he blasted in three of his five goal to effectively set the platform for Cougars’ win.
Hamilton was on target in the 9th, 12th and 22nd, 60th and 80th minute. His teammate, Wayne Joseph was the perfect foil as he netted a brace in the 57th and 83rd minute. Canefield got their other goals from Akeem Bovell (27th & 72nd) and Nkurmah Smith in the 76th minute.
On Sunday, Corriverton Links proved too strong an opponent for Litchfield Nuggets whom they trounced, 8-2 after leading 5-2 at the half way mark.
Corriverton were led to their win on account of Shemron Stewart helmet-trick (24, 31, 63, 67) and an Alex Partab hat-trick (7, 17, 53). Neil Jacobs converted the other goal in the 44th minute.
Litchfield’s goals were scored by Kahdon Archibald (35) and Tyrone Pompey (41).
Matches will continue this weekend weather permitting. On Saturday at the Mahaicony Sports ground, from 14:00hrs, Paradise Invaders will come up against Hopetown United Rangers and on Sunday at the same venue and time, Rosignol United will come up against Mahaicony Thunder Hawks.
At the Canje ground on Sunday, from 16:00hrs, Canefield Diamond Strikers will oppose Litchfield Nuggets. Over at Burnham Park from the same time, Cougars are down to play Monedderlust, while at the Scottsburg ground; Corriverton Links will engage New Amsterdam United.
