Mayor’s Cup football tourney starts today at Victoria

The Mayor’s Cup football tournament will get underway this evening at the Victoria Ground from 6:30pm on the East Coast of Demerara with a double header.
Football fans on the East Coast will get the chance to witness the action and support their respective sides when the tournament kicks off. Coordinator Lennox Arthur informed that things are set for today’s start.
The opening encounter at 6:30pm will pit Buxton Bakewell of the East Coast against Grove Hi Tech of the East Bank Demerara, while at 8:30pm in the nightcap, home side, Victoria Kings challenge Agricola in another East Coast versus East Bank meeting. This contest promises to be keenly contested between two very attacking teams and the home fans are expected to raise the roof in support of the Kings.
Buxton Bakewell would be also looking to represent from the opening whistle as they set the tempo for the night, hoping for an East Coast ‘shut out’, beating their visiting opponents, setting the stage for the second game.
The tournament is set to continue tomorrow, Saturday at the Victoria Ground, at the same times with BV Triumph facing Eagles, while Golden Grove tangle with Herstelling.
More play is set for Sunday, this time at the Den Amstel ground on the Westside with another double header. Pouderoyen challenge Soesdyke in the opening game at 6:30pm, while Den Amstel take on Kuru Kururu at 8:30pm.
The teams are battling for the Mayor’s Cup and a first prize of $700,000, second $300,000, third $200,000 and fourth $100,000.
Arthur, a former National footballer and Coach, has coordinated this event for all of its 22 years, he expressed gratitude to the fans, teams and sponsors who have been patient as they wait for the start of the event. This year’s tournament is part of the 50th Anniversary Jubilee celebrations.
Arthur also expressed gratitude to the sponsors who have assisted so far. Among them are: Aruwai Resorts, Ansa McAl, John Fernandes and Minister of State Joseph Harmon as the key supporters. Others to have thrown their support include the Government of Guyana, Macorp, Busta, Cummings Electrical, Bakewell, IPA, China Trading, E Networks, Namilco and BK International.
