Overnight and early morning rain in the City yesterday and inadequate covers resulted
The inadequately covered pitch and the players playing Football and cricket at DCC yesterday morning.
in the second day of the second round of the GCBs Hand-in-Hand three-day cricket match between front runners Essequibo and the National U-17 select being washed out without a ball being bowled at DCC.
Essequibo, hunting their first ever U-19 three-day title, would have been the more disappointed of the two teams since they were 72 without loss in reply to the U-17s 244 at the end of the opening day.
Mark Williams was looking very good on 56 with nine fours, while Nathan Persaud played an excellent supporting role on 14.
At the scheduled 10:00hrs start yesterday the ground was in a damp state but dried out nicely but uncovered bowlers run up at both ends remained uncovered during a persistent drizzle which lasted for about an hour but made little impact on a ground baked by the sun during the prolonged El Nino dry season.
It was a frustrating time for both teams and their officials as the game was officially called off at 15:35hrs although the players were playing Football and Tapeball cricket throughout the afternoon even though the sun came out in all its glory for the final session.
The ground staff claimed that if the bowler’s run-up was covered as is mandated in the playing conditions of the GCB the game would have started before Lunch.
With the game between Demerara and Berbice having some action yesterday, Essequibo who beat Berbice by an innings at Enterprise in the first round, will hope that the GCB can send more covers to the venue so as to give them an opportunity to get at least first innings points today to stay in contention of playing Demerara in what would be a deciding final round from Thursday.
