The Final of the Guyana Softball League’s (GSL) Minor League 10/10 ebbed and flowed and ended an exciting tournament which attracted nine Primary schools from West Demerara.
A Super over decided the winner of a thrilling Final which saw fans of Leonora Primary and Tuschen Primary, who were both bowled on 66, urging-on their teams as parents of the players from both sides were very vocal in their support.
In the Super over Tuschen scored nine off Leonora Primary Skipper Aryan Persaud before Leonora reached 13 with a boundary to spark jubilation in their Camp.
Persaud called correctly and elected to bat and Nicholas Persaud and Shaheed Vieira built an explosive foundation scoring 31 runs in 2 overs but they lost their way as they only managed 35 runs in the next eight overs.
Alex Ritchie removed the aggressive Nicholas Persaud for a well-played 20 in the third over but Persaud joined Vieira and was immediately into his stride striking consecutive boundaries to get off the mark.
Persaud (15) and Vieira (10) fell with the score on 50 in the fourth over and it was all downhill after that as only Navindra Singh (14) offered fight. Ganesh Rampersaud (5-17) wrecked the lower order and got support from Alex Ritchie (2-19) and Rezekiel Renee (2-13).
Tuschen suffered an early setback when they lost Trevlon Chichester (1) in the second over 5-1.
Renaldo Scotten (28) quickly got them back on track and in the company of Skipper Alex Ritchie 14(2×4) who anchored the innings and it seemed as they were cruising until the hard-hitting Scotten got too ambitious and swung wildly at a Persaud and was caught in the deep.
The innings went into decline but Varendra Narine (7*) and the tail tried to achieve victory but the last man Shane Hemraj ran down the wicket and was dismissed to the disappointment of his teammates and supporters. Persaud ended (2-10) was supported by Vieira (2-8).
Persaud was adjudged the MVP of the tournament having scored heavily, taking 18 wickets and leading his team to an unbeaten run culminating with victory in the final.
A GSL representative congratulated both teams for their exemplary behavior and the standard of play at the presentation of trophies and medals.
Meanwhile, The GSL will start the secondary school tournament shortly and sponsors are invited on board to ensure the young people in the secondary schools have the opportunity to display the talent. The GSL can be contacted on 646-0568.
Additionally based on the success of the tournament the GSL will embark on similar tournaments in other areas to ensure continuity shortly as the sponsorship comes in.
