YBG Region Six-Ancient County Regionals concludes: Kesney superb for Berbice High, Tutorial Academy secures female crown
Kaieteur Sports – Youth Basketball Guyana (YBG) moved one step closer to completing the field for the 19th Annual National School Basketball Festival (NSBF) after Berbice High School and Tutorial Academy captured the Region Six (Ancient County) boys’ and girls’ titles, respectively, on Friday.
With the victories, both schools secured direct qualification to the national championships, which are scheduled to tip off on July 28 under the sponsorship of KFC Guyana.
Berbice High Boys’ was crowned the Region Six-Ancient County Regional’s champions, defeating Line Path 34-28 in the final.
In the boys’ championship clash, Berbice High School punched its ticket to the national finals with a hard-fought 34-28 victory over Skeldon Line Path Secondary, powered by a dominant performance from tournament MVP Avion Kesney.
Kesney erupted for a game-high 22 points, repeatedly attacking the basket and finishing efficiently in the paint as Berbice High controlled the crucial moments down the stretch. His offensive outburst accounted for the bulk of his team’s scoring and proved decisive in securing the regional crown.

The standout guard’s stellar display also earned him the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award. He complemented his scoring effort with three rebounds, while Carlson Mattheson provided valuable support with six points and 11 rebounds. Dontrell Ross also chipped in with six points and seven rebounds as Berbice High completed an impressive championship run.
Skeldon Line Path battled throughout the contest but struggled to contain Kesney’s relentless drives to the rim as Berbice High closed out the game to claim regional supremacy.
The girls’ final produced a defensive battle, but Tutorial Academy showcased its discipline on both ends of the court to defeat JC Chandisingh Secondary 13-9 and secure the Region Six Girl’s title.

Jada Alexander led the charge for Tutorial Academy with six points and eight rebounds, delivering a well-rounded performance that earned her Player of the Match honours. Alexander controlled the boards and made key plays at both ends of the court, while AfiyahHytmiah provided important support as Tutorial gradually pulled away.
Tutorial’s defensive intensity proved to be the difference, limiting JC Chandisingh’s scoring opportunities throughout the contest. Shaqueena Collins was the lone bright spark for the runners-up, finishing with five points, but her efforts were not enough to prevent Tutorial Academy from lifting the championship trophy.
With Georgetown, East Coast and Berbice champions now crowned, anticipation continues to build ahead of the 2026 NSBF. Several of the country’s strongest basketball programmes have already secured their places, setting the stage for what promises to be one of the most competitive editions of the tournament in recent years.
The regional championships are sponsored by Edward B. Beharry Ltd., G-Boats Inc., the National Sports Commission, the Ministry of Education, and Banks DIH Ltd.
