National Guinness champions Sparta Boss maintained their unbeaten run after handing Albouystown their first defeat, surviving 4-3 in a fiercely fought contest as play in the inaugural GT Beer / Petra Organisation Futsal Competition continued Sunday night, at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Dennis Edwards opened the scoring for Sparta Boss in the sixth minute after racing on to a loose ball, before easing it into an empty goal. Two minutes later, Eusi Phillips made it 2-0 when he delivered a stinging shot into the roof of the net following a slick pass from a free kick taken on the left flank.
When the skilful Deon Alfred made it 3-0 in the 10th minute from a volley that beat the goalkeeper all ends up it seemed as though Albouystown were going to be routed as the two teams went to the break with Sparta Boss enjoying a comfortable lead.
The final period commenced with Albouystown looking more purposeful, but Sparta Boss backline holding firm until the diminutive Devon Dooker found a little space to deliver a fierce right-footer into the goal after twenty-one minutes as they trailed 1-3.
However, Alfred would have none of it as he unleashed a crushing left-footer in the 26th minute of play to restore Sparta’s three-goal cushion. Marlon Nedd, who was being kept quiet all night suddenly burst into life as he evaded one tackle, before firing past the goalkeeper one minute later.
With time running out, Albouystown got another consolation goal on the stroke of full time through goalkeeper Devon Cassius, who had advanced deep out of his goal to intercept a pass and smashed his effort into the opposing goal just as the final whistle sounded.
Despite a 5-4 win over Agricola in their final group stage encounter, Queen Street of Tiger Bay failed to make it to the next phase by virtue of an inferior goal difference. With Festival City beating Kitty Weavers 5-3 in their final group-A clash, Queen Street Tiger Bay needed to win by at least two goals to stand a chance of advancing, but they failed to do so and will have to wait until next year.
Agricola needed only to draw to advance to the next round and made a disastrous start in the match as Darren Harris found the back of the net from a counterattack after three minutes.
Two minutes later Jason Fredericks made it 2-0 with a right-footer that beat the goalkeeper, before he returned in the second period to make it 3-0, sliding the ball past the keeper in the 18th minute.
Travis Welch scored in the 21st minute with a right sided shot into the centre of the goal to open Agricola’s account, before their talisman Kacy John scored one minute later, blasting his effort from the left side of the field.
Anthony Rollins 24th minute strike made matters worse for Queen Street as their lead evaporated in no time and chances of qualifying even more difficult. Queen Street with no other choice but to attack was compensated in the 27th minute when Harris scored.
Their fortunes seemed to be changing when Alpha Fletchman netted one minute later to leave them in with a chance with two minutes to play. However, Rollins’ 29th minute lucky strike dented their hopes of progressing further as the final whistle sounded.
With the win, Queen Street finished on three points and a goal difference of -2 while Agricola finished on three points and a goal differential of -4. On the other hand, Kitty Weavers finished with three points and a goal difference of -2. However, Kitty Weavers claimed their spot in the knockout round due to the head-to-head regulation after defeating Queen Street 5-4 in their earlier group meeting.
In the other result, Festival City downed Kitty Weavers 5-3. Daniel Favourite netted a double in the 12th and 28th minutes while Dwayne Lawrence recorded the fastest goal of the event in the 18 second, Eon Alleyne scored in the second and Solomon Austin netted in the 18th minute.
Nigel Denny netted in the 11th and 21st minutes, while an own goal completed the tally for Kitty Weavers. Alexander Village cruised past Globe Yard 7-2 to earn their first win. A pair of goals each from Shem Porter in the second and 28th, Leon Yaw in the 12th and 29th and Delon Williams in the 24th and 26th led the assault, while Jermin Junor 20th minute strike completed their tally.
Kevon Gibbs and Lionel Grimes in the fourth and 15th minutes respectively netted for Globe Yard. Action continues tomorrow night at the same venue with the final group fixtures. Winner of the event will receive $500,000 and trophy, while the second, third and fourth place finishers will collect $250,000, $125,000 and $75,000 respectively.
