It has been more than a year since the governing scrabble entity, the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP), has been dysfunctional and several concerned affiliates have been attempting to employ strategies to have the sport resuscitated.
It was an anxiety to promote the sport that led top seeds, Carlton Murray and his wife, Yvonne, to organize a monthly tournament among a six man group at their Nandy Park home. The duo is certainly not satisfied with the ‘in house’ affair and to that extent has ventured further afield.
This morning, Ms Murray will journey to the Caramel Secondary School, Charlestown, to engage several teachers in the intricacies of the sport with the objective of installing the game into the school’s curriculum.
Several schools have signaled an intention to be a part of the exercise including President’s College, Caramel Secondary, Charlestown Secondary, North Ruimveldt Multilateral Secondary, St Roses High School, Annandale Secondary, Enterprise Secondary and Buxton Secondary.
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport yesterday morning, Ms Murray explained that scrabble is a very interactive game that could also assist schoolchildren’s vocabulary and spelling propensities. She said that today’s session will be introductory in nature and mentors will explain the general objective while attempting to garner support from the various schools.
Ms Murray further explained that two retired head teachers will comprise the audience today as well as a teacher out of Enterprise, Kamta Ramnarine, also an ardent player. They will subsequently direct the process until a proper administrative structure is established. Several entities and individuals have contributed to the success of the initiative including Kaieteur News journalist, Franklyn Wilson and Secretary of the Guyana Cricket Board and Director of the West Indies Cricket Board, Anand Sanassie. The session gets underway at 14:00hrs.
