The confidence and trust placed by sponsors on the work of the Berbice Cricket Board was further emphasized when another new cricket competition was launched recently at the board office. Mukesh Appiah said via telephone that he was impressed with the work of the Cricket Board over the years and was very pleased when Anil Beharry was elected as the president for the 2015-2016 term. He said that he is from No. 19 Village, the same as Beharry and thought it fit to support the game in some way.
With the recent death of his father, Ramnarine Appiah popular known as Brother Appiah, Mukesh will honour him by this sponsorship. Brother Appiah was very community minded and loved by all that came into contact with him during his life.
Speaking on behalf of the Competitions Committee of the BCB, Carl Moore said that this competition will replace the Bobcat of Berbice and will be of 20 overs-a-side for second division teams from the East Bank Berbice, New Amsterdam, East Canje and No 19 area. He added that the teams will be divided in four zones with the winners going on to the knockout phase. The winner will take home cash incentives and a beautiful trophy. He emphasized the importance of this competition as it relates to the involvement of all persons in the villages. It will also help to find new talents and renew the interest of the game in the villages. He promised the sponsor that the conclusion of the tournament will coincide with the one year memorial of his father Brother Appiah.
Anil Beharry, President of the BCB thanked his friend Mukesh Appiah for his kind gesture and the confidence he has shown in the work of the board. He promised that the tournament will be well run and full of excitement. He added that the village teams are looking forward for these kinds of cricket, something lacking for a while. He added that the board, despite its limited resources, is making sure that cricket is played at all levels and all over the county. He said that he is working hard on securing sponsorship for a three day cricket competition which is missing for the longest while. He said three day cricket will be played under his tenure as President, with or without sponsorship. He said also that many of the first division clubs have shown willingness to assist the BCB in this venture.
The board secretary Angela Haniff echoed the sentiments of Moore and Beharry. Clubs are to make contact with Mr Carl Moore as early as possible on 614-8364 or call the board office on 333-2375.
