Just back from South Africa with the West Indies team after finishing just behind Devon Smith with runs in the first phase of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Regional First-Class Cricket Franchise 31-year-old Guyanese left-hander Narsingh Deonarine was expected to make a big impact in the middle for the Guyana Jaguars at Sabina Park yesterday.
But that was not to be as the Berbician, who has played 18 Tests and 31 ODIs, missed the fifth round match against Jamaica because of the ‘flu’ a day after being bought by the Jamaica Tallawahs Franchise at the CPL draft at the Terra Nova Hotel in Kingston on Thursday.
The flamboyant Deonarine has played eight T20 International and 38 T20s overall could also bowl decent off-spin.
One of 17 Berbicians to play Test cricket, Deonarine told Kaieteur Sports yesterday that he was told to rest for a week but should fully fit for the Jaguars’ next match against the Leewards in Antigua from next Friday.
“I am looking forward to continue making runs in the four-day tournament and I am confident that if I do that I can get back into the Test team to play England later this year,” Deonarine said.
But before that, the exciting Deonarine will suit up for Jamaica Tallawahs as one of their overseas players in the 2015 Caribbean Premier League (CPL) T20 tournament.
“I am delighted to be picked by Jamaica since I was ignored by my home team last year. Good performances in the CPL could open up lots of opportunities for me since the CPL will be seen by millions around the World on TV,” Deonarine stated.
Deonarine, who hit Samuel Badree for six with five needed from two balls to beat Trinidad & Tobago in the inaugural Sanford t20 final in Antigua, said he would put his best foot forward for his new team even when they play against the Guyana Amazon Warriors.
“When I get picked for any team it becomes your team and this year I feel Jamaica has a really good side which can win this tournament and I intend to play my part in that. When I come up against Guyana I will play as hard as I do for any other match even though it is not really a Guyana team but a franchise team made up of different players from all over,” Deonarine added.
Shiv Chanderpaul is one of the new additions to the Amazon Warriors team to play in the competition which is scheduled to commence on June 20 in Barbados with the Amazon Warriors facing the Barbados Tridents from 18:00hrs.
The Guyana based Franchise team oppose Red Steel on June 26 at the Queens Park Oval from 18: 00hrs, the Warriors battle the Zouks at Warner Park on June 30 before they play their return match against the Zouks at Warner Park in St Kitts on July 3.
On July 8 the Warriors travel to the USA to face Ft Lauderdale in Broward before the Warriors play the Jamaica Tallawahs at Sabina Park, while Guyana’s game on home soil is on July 15 in a day night game at Providence from 18:00hrs when they oppose Ft Lauderdale.
The Warriors play their next three matches at Providence on Friday, July 17 when they play the Tallawahs from 18:00hrs and July 18 when they come up against the Red Steel from 16:00hrs before facing off with the Tridents on July 20.
The final four will be played in Trinidad from July 24-26. Florida based side Ft Lauderdale has been added to this year’s CPL.
