A 25-year-old father of two, who was busted by a party of police ranks as he was reportedly transporting a quantity of marijuana into the interior, was remanded to prison when he appeared in court yesterday.
Jermaine Beveney was taken before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court to respond to a drug trafficking charge.
It is alleged that Beveney had 457 grammes of marijuana on September 6 at Itaballi in the Mazaruni River for the purpose of trafficking. He pleaded not guilty and submitted an application for bail, through his lawyer James Bond.
Prosecutor Inspector Michael Grant explained that around 18:20 hours, ranks were conducting routine checks when motor vehicle PKK531 arrived at the checkpoint at Itaballi.
Grant related that there were several persons, including the defendant, who occupied the vehicle and they were all asked to exit the vehicle so that it could be searched.
The court heard that the occupants were asked to identify their luggage and a search was also conducted on their person and belongings. Grant claimed that the prohibited substance was found in a bag the defendant claimed was his.
The Prosecution said that Beveney was told of the offence, arrested and charged.
Grant opposed bail citing the nature and prevalence of the offence. He also stated that as it relates to this offence, special reason must be given for bail to be granted.
Meanwhile, Bond said that his client is not a flight risk and that he has never been charged before. He said on the day in question, Beveney and his wife, along with other relatives, were travelling to the interior where they have an operation.
The lawyer claimed that when they arrived at the checkpoint at Itaballi, the police stopped them for a routine check and found the illegal substance in a bag, which they suspected belong to Beveney.
Bond disclosed that Beveney and his wife were arrested, but she was later released and he was charged with the offence.
Notwithstanding his application, Beveney was remanded to prison. The case was transferred and is set to be called again on September 18 at the Bartica Magistrates’ Court.
