A very wise man once said “It’s not what enters a person’s mouth that degrades him…. It’s what comes out of it.”
Life and death is in the power of our tongues and each day we need to remember that.
We must strive as much as possible to use our tongues for good, rather than evil.
Every day we can use our tongues to bring those around us much joy, encouragement and happiness. Unfortunately that same tongue can cause those same people hurt, pain and unhappiness.
If we could control our tongues, we could also control ourselves in every other way.
The saying goes, ‘We are like cats; we lick ourselves with our tongues!’ When someone spreads gossip, mark that person carefully. Why? Because if they talk to you about somebody else, they’ll talk to somebody else about you.
The good book warns us about three things:
(1) A hasty tongue…There is more hope for a fool than a man who is hasty in his words. We need to be slow to speak, because when we speak too quickly, most times we say things that we regret because we say hurtful things to others.
If you take time to get the facts, much of the time you’ll speak differently… So think, before you jump to conclusions.
(2) A flattering tongue. ‘…There is no faithfulness in some people’s mouth…they flatter with their tongues.’ You should say what you mean and mean what you say. Be genuine! When you flatter people, you manipulate them for your own ends. Don’t do that. Give it to them straight. If you love them, be truthful with them.
(3) A judgmental tongue. ‘Judge not, that you be not judged. For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you.’ If you live long enough, you’ll be guilty of many of the same things you’re so quick to condemn in others. The truth is, how you deal with other people determines how the Creator deals with you.
Remember, words can be medicines but they can also be poisons. Words can heal but they can also kill… It all depends on how, when and where they are used and against whom! Let us not abuse our words. It’s a misuse of the tongue!”
As we interact with our friends, relatives and co-workers this week, let’s commit to using our tongues to put a smile on someone’s face rather than a frown.
