(Kaieteur News) – Dem boys seh dem confused. Real confused.
Because dem boys been hearing how the whole nation paralyzed with grief after the boat disaster. Tears, mourning, condolences, solemn faces and speeches about a national tragedy. But dem boys looking around and wondering, “Where is the grief?”
Because while the country supposedly mourning, an international T20 cricket tournament going on full blast. Crowds cheering, sixes disappearing into de stands and when Amazon Warriors win, people behaving like dem just win Independence.
And now? Sold-out final.
Dem boys seh this looking like somebody decide to throw a big birthday party right in the middle of a funeral.
One minute people posting black ribbons and saying “Never Forget.” Next minute dem in the stands shouting, “Catch he! Catch he!” Then somebody hitting a six and half the stadium jumping up like Lazarus just come back from de grave.
And de bars? Open. Music? Playing.
Roads? Still behaving like the road code is merely a suggestion from somebody who never drive before. Drivers still overtaking on blind corners, motorcyclists still flying between vehicles, minibuses still stopping wherever dem please and pedestrians still crossing highways with the confidence of people who believe God personally assigned dem a guardian angel.
So, what exactly happened to grief? Because grief apparently now got office hours.
From 8 to 10 in de morning: National Mourning. 10 to 12: Commercial Break. 12 to 7: Business as usual. 7 to 10: Cricket. After 10: Party.
Dem boys not saying people must stop living. Life does continue. But there is a difference between continuing to live and pretending nothing happened. A tragedy of this magnitude supposed to leave a mark on the national psyche.
Instead, Guyana looking like the show must go on—and apparently the show got tickets, floodlights, DJs and a sold-out final.
Talk half. Leff half.
