Police are investigating the death of a 58-year-old retired policeman who died around 23:30 hrs Thursday after slamming
into the open door of a parked car at Goedverwagting, East Coast Demerara (ECD).
Wallace Nurse, a father of three, of Lot 17 Sparendaam, East Coast Demerara (ECD) was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) while his reputed wife, Jophen Howel who was the pillion rider, escaped unhurt.
Police in a statement said that investigations so far have revealed that Nurse was riding his motor cycle CC 9486 when he collided with the door of a parked car.
Howel, in an interview with this newspaper yesterday explained that she telephoned her husband and requested him to pick her up from work at the Caricom Secretariat building on the ECD following the end of her shift at 23:00hrs.
“He picked me up and we were going home. Just as we passed the traffic light at Ogle, we had the accident,” Howel said.
She further explained that the place was dark and while at Goedverwagting her husband noticed a dark coloured car parked alongside the public road.
“He see the car and swerved away from it but we didn’t know the car door was open and we collided,” the widow said, adding that her husband sustained most of the injuries because he was at the front.
Nurse, who was working as a security officer at the Ogle International Hotel at the time of his death was taken to the hospital by the driver of the car with which he collided.
“When we fall on the road my husband didn’t say anything else. He didn’t move or groan but when we were in the car going to the hospital, he move a little,” Howel explained.
“He (driver) said that he parked on the public road because he was attending to something in his car trunk,” Howel stressed.
The driver of the car has been taken into police custody and is assisting with information.
