Fire leaves family homeless after morning prayer
Kaieteur News – A family of four was left homeless on Sunday after a fire destroyed their two-story wooden and concrete home at David James Scheme, Charity Essequibo Coast, Region two.

Fire fighters combing through the debris to make sure that the fire was completely extinguished.
Reports are that the home caught fire between 07:15 and 08:30 hrs., about an hour after an incense (agrabatti) and diya was lit and left burning at the family’s religious altar for morning prayers.
Police said that the house belonged to truck driver, Deodat Maniram, 38, who lived in the upper-flat with his wife and two daughters ages 10 and eight.
Investigators are still investigating the cause of fire but preliminary findings revealed that at around 07:15 hrs., Maniram’s wife lit agrabatti and a diya at their altar-situated next to a window fitted with a cloth curtain- before heading downstairs with their daughters.
Lighting a diya and incense is part of their routine religious practice each morning.
Maniram’s wife recalled that at around 08:30 Hrs. she heard a noise coming from the upper flat of the building. One of her daughters went to check and found out that the top flat was on fire.
After raising an alarm, Maniram’s wife tried to extinguish the flames but it was already too late. She quickly contacted the Guyana Fire Service in Essequibo.
Fire fighters arrived promptly and were able to put out the blaze but were unable to save the family’s home.
Police in a press release said, “The upper flat was completely destroyed by fire, with only a few upright posts remained”.
The lower flat was partially damaged but fire debris was seen scattered around the lower flat and onto a shed situated on the eastern, western, and northern sides of the building.
“The property was not insured, and the value of the loss is not estimated as yet”, police said.
