Kaieteur News – A man is now on the run after he reportedly stabbed his drinking buddy to death around 22:00 hrs on Saturday during a scuffle for a $1000 he was owed.
The dead man has been identified as Curtis Bengochea, 28, a construction worker of Third Street Ivon Road Soesdyke, East Bank Demerara (EBD).
Reports are that the men were drinking with some other friends (all males) at First Street, Ivon Road when the suspect asked Bengochea to give him back a $1000, he had given him.
Bengochea reportedly refused.
“The now deceased (Bengochea) told the suspect that he’s buying (drinks) all night for him so he isn’t giving him back no money”, police said.
His response reportedly annoyed the suspect who retaliated by whipping out a knife and slapping him two times.
One of the other drinking buddies told police that Bengochea defended himself by lashing the suspect to the face with a Guinness bottle that was nearby.
The suspect fell into a nearby drain and Bengochea jumped in behind him and they started to scuffle.
Two of the drinking buddies attempted to part the men, but Bengochea was motionless when he was pulled from the drain.
They soon realised that Bengochea had been stabbed. The suspect then escaped as police were called to the scene.
“The body was examined and one laceration suspected to be that of a stab wound was seen on the left … ribs area”, police said while adding that his remains was first taken to the Diamond Hospital for further examination before being taken to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home.
The hunt is on for the suspect as the investigation continues.
Police learnt that the suspect and two men had met Bengochea drinking with another friend on Saturday at Ivon Road Head and joined them.
At around 22:00 hrs. they left in a car and went to First Street where they continued drinking until Bengochea was killed.
