Dear Editor,
The GFF congress held on the 26th April 2014 were represented by delegates. The mandate of delegates who represent various associations and affiliates at the GFF congress should be given from the very clubs who elect them to serve their interest. The question to be asked of all those clubs; did they give the mandate to move a vote of no-confidence against the GFF President, Christopher Matthias?
I am very much interested in finding out if this mandate was given to the Georgetown Football Association delegates who vehemently supported that motion. The GFA under the stewardship of Mr Matthias as general secretary of that body was the pioneer for the now popular GFA Banks cup.
It was Matthias and team who when the clubs in Georgetown were denied playing the sport because of the GFF and GFA debacle brought about the now famous end of year tournament that rivaled the KS tournament. All of the clubs, inclusive of clubs from the associations that put forward and supported the motion, were all paid after the hosting of two successful tournaments with the GFA making profits both years.
After Matthias’ departure from the GFA end of year tournament, countless clubs from Georgetown and other association are yet to be paid their appearance fees for their participation in the 2013- 2014 tournament and to date, no written correspondents were sent or received to explain why. It was also posited that the GFA is in over twenty million debt, yes $20,000,000 after two successful years of making a profit after all expenses paid.
Are the players and clubs aware of what their delegates did at the congress? Did the coaches of the Guyana Coaches Association give their delegation the go ahead to support a motion of no confidence and to support a walk out?
Are those delegates really representing the interest of those who elect them to serve or are they representing their own interest? I believe if those actions were in contradiction to the mandate given by the clubs/associations, coaches and or referees, then those representatives should be given a vote of no-confidence for failure to carry out the dictates of those that elected them to serve. A vote of no-confidence for carrying out one’s personal interest rather that the associations or the affiliates.
The development of Guyana’s football development should always be paramount for all associations and affiliates of the Guyana Football Federation and self interest should always be secondary.
Yours faithfully,
Jermaine Figueira
