The year 2014 marked one hundred years since the Everest Cricket Club has been in existence and on Thursday last the club launched its 100th Anniversary souvenir magazine.
The publication highlights the club’s success over the years and contains articles on the history of the club, softball cricket, lecture by Professor Clem Seecharan, features on past and present cricketers and messages from H. E. President Donald Ramoutar and Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr. Frank Anthony.
Speaking at the launching, publisher Vickram Singh of Classimag, said it was very challenging and efforts are underway to do another publication.
Newly elected president, Stephen Lewis stated that the club has cultivated a rich history over the years and it is their desire to produce a more comprehensive research in the form of a book in the near future.
He added the club has planned a number of activities to celebrate their milestone.
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr Frank Anthony explained that the club has played an important role in the development of the East Indian community in Guyana. He said that history is important. “One of the differences with organizations is that they do not document their history and it becomes lost to the next generation so I am happy to learn that the club has undertaken to write a book about its history,” he said.
The minister stated that cricket is important to Guyana and people must be encouraged to play and have vibrant club structures. He congratulated the executive of the club for the magazine.
The Everest Cricket Club formerly the British Guiana East Indian Cricket Club, was founded in 1914 by John Aloysius Veerasawmy.
