Excellent running on the curve and a strong finish ensured talented sprinter Jevina Sampson is a strong medal favourite at the impending CARIFTA Games later this month when she competed at the National Youth and Junior Championships held yesterday at the Police Sports Club ground, Eve Leary.
Sampson exploded out of the blocks, taking command of the race at the curve before finishing strong to record an impressive time of 24.6s in the female under-18 200 metres.
Club mate Avon Samuels dipped under the 25s mark (24.9s), while Ruth Sanmoogan was third in 25.90s.
Sampson also doubled in the female under-18 400 metres clocking 58.10s, while Samuels was again second (58.30s) and Natricia Hooper third (58.90s).
CARIFTA bronze medalist Jason Yaw was somewhat off his impressive showing at the CARIFTA trials two weeks ago, clocking 51.00s in the male under-18 400 metres to outrun Kwesi Blair (53.60s).
Yaw was also the winner of the male 200 metres (21.60s), while Linton Mentis was second in 22.20s. Akeem Johnson was third (22.80s).
CARIFTA selectee Kade Pearce, who not only failed to win the triple jump he was selected for but fell to third place, will certainly be cause for concern.
Damon Williams defeated Pearce, winning the event with a better distance than that of Pearce’s games qualifying mark. Williams jumped 12.94 metres to win the event, while Clarence Green was second with 12.52 metres. Pearce was way of his CARIFTA performance of 12.87s metres jumping 12.07 metres for third at the junior championships.
Junior sprinter Kevin Abbensetts continued to rule the roost winning both the male under-20 100 and 200 metres, clocking 10.7s to win the 100 metres, slower than his CRAIFTA trials time (10.4s), while clocking 21.8s which was also slower his CARIFTA performance of 21.5s.
CARIFTA selectee Natricia Hooper continued her dominance in the triple jump, with 10.96 metres to out jump Kalanie Griffith (9.66 metres).
Shannon Griffith was also impressive, capturing four events among the female under-20s. She won the 100 metres in 12.30s and the 200 in 25.70s. The talented Lindener also sprung to the long jump title with 4.54 metres while going taking the triple jump with 10.17 metres.
