Repairs to a key generator on the Essequibo Coast are completed and there are plans to add another unit shortly, the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) announced yesterday.
That Region Two area has been facing significant power outages recently.
The Wartsila unit, from February 27th to Wednesday, March 12th, underwent a rigorous maintenance process.
GPL said that works were successful at the Anna Regina Wartsila plant.
Residents between Onderneeming to Supernaam and Devonshire Castle to Charity, Region Two, were affected.
“Cognizant of the electricity difficulties experienced in Essequibo, GPL pledges its unwavering commitment to the residents of Essequibo to continuously work to provide quality electricity despite our constraints,” the state owned company said yesterday.
GPL’s longer-term development plans for Essequibo extends beyond engine overhauls for existing infrastructure.
“In the latter half of this year, our company is proposing to complete the foundations for a new four-MW HFO fired Unit at Anna Regina and the foundations for a new 3 x 2 MW HFO fired power station at Bartica.”
GPL also said that on the program for this year is the installation and commissioning of two new 500 kVA generating sets at Leguan, and one new 500 kVA set at Wakenaam with a view to providing a 24 hours, seven days per week service.
GPL has been battling a rising demand for power as new housing schemes and companies continue to be added to the grid rapidly.
Government has been eyeing hydro-power as one of the answers to growing demand and for the long term reduction of its high fuel bill.
These development plans will work together to provide the residents of Essequibo with the best quality supply of Electricity.
