Kwesi ‘Lightening struck Assassin’ Jones tackles Shawn Corbin in highly anticipated slugfest

Kwesi ‘Lightening struck Assassin’ Jones was devastating in his bout against Barbadian based boxer, Cleveland Fraser in April last year, dealing him a wicked uppercut in the latter rounds to send him into dreamland.
Jones would have also enjoyed a hike in the ratings after defeating former European champion and world rater, Howard ‘Battersea Bomber’ Eastman. Despite these wins many continue to doubt Jones’ ability and punching power claiming that he is still to be tested.
Maybe, the officials of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) have heard the remarks and have sought out someone to test Jones’ ability once and for all. And so, on Friday June 1, Jones will be required to pull off all the stops if he is to get past Trinidadian based Guyanese, Shawn Corbin in defense of his local Light/Heavyweight title.

Corbin is currently engaged in stiff training in Trinidad and Tobago and Jones opened camp at the Andrew ‘Sixheads’ Lewis Boxing gym (ALBG) yesterday afternoon moments after he had scrawled his signature on the document to make the bout authentic.
Corbin has quite a reputation and is no stranger to the bright lights having won the Light/Heavyweight Caribbean Boxing Federation (CABOFE) title earlier in his career. He lost that title but has since been practicing his trade in the Twin Island Republic in the hope of procuring another shot at that accolade.
The imminent bout could just provide the platform for him to fulfill his desires since a win could earn him the local crown which could put him in place for another shot at the CABOFE title.
Jones has proven his worth after defeating Eastman and Fraser and would be out to prove that he has what champions are made of. Further, he would be aware of the importance of defeating Corbin since the latter pugilist has built quite a reputation locally and internationally. A thrilling bout is surely envisaged.
The card comprises three other professional bouts and the usual 4 bout amateur affair. Yesterday afternoon the other principals convened at the Avenue of the Republic offices of Abdool and Abdool for the contract signing ceremony and are all oozing confidence.
In the main supporting bout, Trinidadian based Iwan Azore will match skills with Barbadian, Miguel Antoine in a 6 rounds Junior/Welterweight affair while Light/Heavyweight Kelsie George will face off with James Walcott over 4 rounds.
Rudolph Fraser, fresh from his second round demolition of Barbadian based Guyanese, Gardiel Roberts, will start the night’s proceedings with a 4 rounder against Lindener Cassius Matthews in a Jnr/Welterweight scrap. As usual, Kaieteur Sport will keep the nation abreast of the activities in the various training camps.
