Taffin Khan, Anthony Drayton emerge winners of Topco Mashramani Chess tournament

junior player, Anthony Drayton, secured the top prizes in their respective categories when the Topco Juices Mashramani Chess tournament concluded at the at the Kei-shar’s Sports Club Sunday afternoon last.
Khan conceded a draw against Drayton but went on to win all of his seven other encounters to relegate Maria Thomas to second place while Frankie Farley closed off the podium spots. The point standings for the seniors read: Taffin Khan (7 ½), Maria Thomas (5), Frankie Farley (4 ½), David Khan (4) with Alex Joseph in the cellar on three points.
Despite losing to Queen’s College student, Cecil Cox, Drayton still managed to clinch first place. This was possible through the employment of shrewd tactics on the part of the eventual winner. Drayton turned in a master performance in the final round which, in the end, was decisive in his triumph. Paired with veteran player David Khan, the two were engaged in a tense encounter but the senior Khan blundered when he missed an important pawn advance and an opportunity to ensnare and capture Drayton’s active rook which was already behind enemy lines and poised to attack Khan’s king.
A few moves later, only bishops, pawns and the two kings remained in a theoretically drawn position. Under severe time pressure, Khan caved in and eventually resigned, paving the way for Drayton to secure the top spot.
Cecil Cox finished second in the junior category while Roberto Neto of Diamond Secondary finished third. His schoolmate, Viddesh Shameer placed fourth while young Heimraj Resaul of Marian’s Academy received a medal for being the best newcomer. Point standings for the juniors are: Anthony Drayton (6 ½), Cecil Cox (6), Roberto Neto and Viddesh Shameer (4 ½ each) while Resaul amassed 2 ½ points. Marketing Representative of DDL/Topco, Larry Wills was on hand to present the respective prizes to the winners.
