Dear Editor,
The Japan Karate Association (JKA) has not been the leader for karate for over thirty years. Many are holding on to this fantasy even in the midst of the death of masters and vast migration to Europe and America by their top instructors.
The JKA, while is still a well established and credible group, is certainly not the largest and may well be among the smallest in the World. Gone are the days when Japan was the leader. This position goes to Europe and America. Now, students of the great masters (Nishiyama, Kanazawa, Okazaki, Oyama) are occupying leadership positions in the Global karate community. We have Frank Woon-a-Tai and Stephen Monasingh (Guyana), Anthony and Stephen Parris (Trinidad and Tobago), Ray Dalke (USA), and Teri O’Neil (England) just to name a few.
So, karate is now truly an international martial art. For the past ten years Japan has been trying to secure leadership rites via international competitions but even in this area they are not excelling. Mrs. Kumarie Jagnarain General-Secretary Guyana Karate Association
