$1 Million donated to 13 cricket clubs as Berbice benefit from Food for the Poor generosity
Thirteen cricket clubs out of the Ancient County of Berbice were the beneficiaries of more than $1M worth of items compliments of the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club (RHTY&SC) and the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) with support from Food For the Poor (Guy) Inc., when officials from those entities visited the office of the RHTY&SC, Area ‘H’ Ground, Tuesday morning last.
Those clubs included Bush Lot United Cricket Club, Bath Cricket Club, Edinburgh Cricket Club, Young Warriors Cricket Club, Memorex Bermine Cricket Club, Police ‘B’ Division Cricket Club, Port Mourant Cricket Club, Tamarind Root Cricket Club, Johanna Young Ivory, No. 64 Cricket Club, Whim National Cricket Club, Chesney Cricket Club and Young Star Cricket Club of Upper Corentyne
They received ladies and gent’s footwear, foodstuff, visual board organisers, bottled water, detergents and cosmetics among other items. Secretary of the RHTY&SC and Chairman of the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) Special Events Committee, Hilbert Foster spearheaded the project and noted that the donation would serve as a motivating factor to boost the players’ morale as they aspire for higher goals.
He further stated that despite the rapid rise of the sport in the region, some clubs are unable to address their training schedules devoid of the requisite gears. He also noted that these clubs are also facing challenges in securing adequate transportation and uniform.
The RHTY&SC Secretary further pointed out that acquisition of the relevant gears is extremely important especially since cricket has attracted larger participation from the Under-13 to senior levels.

In an emotional speech, Foster noted that the sport is currently undergoing a metamorphosis and is enjoying massive all round development and progress. He further stated that the pride, passion and commitment, once an important feature of the sport in the Ancient County have returned with the synergy between the Board and cricketing public being at an all time high.
He expressed gratitude to Food for the Poor boss Mr. Leon Davis while disclosing that the distribution was the third of its kind. He also urged the thirteen clubs to utilize the items for their intended purposes.
President of the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB), Keith Foster hailed the presentation and dubbed the occasion another blue ribbon day in the development of cricket in the region. He pointed out that his executives intend to have every cricket club in Berbice functioning at top capacity and playing at all levels.
Mr. Foster further expressed gratitude to the Food for the Poor boss for the support rendered.
He reminded that his executives are committed to the all round development of the sport to the benefit of all stakeholders.
There are more than one hundred functioning cricket clubs in Berbice and Mr. Foster committed to the development of each saying that in near future all of these entities would receive assistance from the board. He further exhorted that that under his administration Berbice cricket would experience positive changes.
Mr. Davis subsequently lauded the leadership of the Berbice Cricket Board for their vision, wisdom and inspiration. He expressed delight at the strides made by the executives saying that it was great to see how the Berbice Cricket Board had transformed itself from being a mere cricketing authority into a highly successful NGO even as executives impact positively on the lives of their charges.
The Food for the Poor boss informed that he has been a staunch cricket fan since 1957 and he strongly believes that sports is an important way of life for any country as it promotes unity and discipline while developing strong relations. He then promised to continue investing in sports with a great emphasis on cricket even as he urged the BCB executive to develop a comprehensive plan for the game in the ancient county.
Mr. Davis then urged the private sector to invest in the development of cricket with a heavy emphasis on young talent. He also expressed disappointment of the state of cricket in Essequibo while urging that common sense prevail to correct the situation.
Inspector Budnarine Persaud of the Police ‘B’ Division Cricket team delivered the vote of thanks and expressed gratitude on behalf of the recipients. He also posited that Berbice Cricket is heading in the right direction.
