A call for the Education ministry to look at these School sports events

The time has surely come for the Ministry of Education and the relevant authorities to review the Annual Athletics Events hosted by the schools.
Something is definitely wrong as the events seem today to be more of a Fun day and avenue for immoral activities than on producing future role models and heroes in the athletics, cycling and swimming disciplines.
The recent brutal murder of 14 years Indranie Basdeo in Black Bush Polder during a school athletic event should be the wake up call for all involved that something has to be done.
Ms. Basdeo cried for help went unanswered because the music system was playing too loud.
Over the last two weekends I had the misfortune of being in the Area “H” Ground where the office of the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club is based during the hosting of two schools Athletics Inter-house Programmes.
During one of the events, I was forced to leave my office due to the loud and lewd music which gave me a pounding headache. The Events looked more like a “bubble or pasa pasa session” with the attire of the students especially female mostly suited for an adult dance hall, while 99% of them were totally uninterested in the Athletics.
The standards of the Athletics were also very poor as it seemed more of the case of who wanting to have some fun. I spoke to several students who had no idea of the names of the Houses taking part, which one of the Houses was in the lead or who were the star athletes.
Students were seen with Beer bottles in their hands, while in some cases it was difficult to know the difference between Teachers and Students.
As a Youth & Sports Administrator who has dedicated more then half of my life to youth development, I am publicly calling on the Ministry of Education to review all Schools Athletics Events. My recommendations are as follows:
1. There should be a ban on music sets at these events. Let the events be for unearthing athletes, nothing more. The must set serves no purpose than to encourage immoral behavior.
2. Students and Teachers should be attired in school uniform – after all it is still a school day.
3. No person outside of the school system apart from parents should be allowed entry into the venue. If this was the policy, Ms. Basdeo might still be alive.
4. Strict supervision must be done over persons allowed to sell in the venues as some of them secretly sell alcoholic beverages to students and unwanted guests.
5. The school authorities should ensure that there is Police presence at all events to maintain order.
Mr. Editor, unless we as responsible adults and administrators do something urgently our youths, the future leaders of our beloved country would continue to fall down the drain morally.
We must make sure that the school sports system achieves which was supposed to – produce Guyana’s next Athletic Star.
At the moment the emphasis seems more on the loud music sets, young school couples having day of fun, sexy clothing and youth with Beer bottles in their hands.
Our school system is supposed to be the breeding ground for moral and upright standards and in closing; I would like to quote my favourite passage of my late grand mother “The best time to straighten a tree is when it is young”.
