Abigail McDonald celebrated her birth anniversary with a definitive victory when the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP) staged an open championship in the pavilion of the Malteenoes Cricket Club yesterday afternoon. She amassed 5 points and a positive spread of 801 to relegate Moen Gafoor into second position, also with 5 points but a lower positive spread of 176. Colin Chichester closed off the podium spots with 4 games and a positive spread of ninety four.
The morning sessions surely belonged to the birthday girl who made a clean sweep of her games closing off with a positive spread of 744. Among her victims were Wayne Cave (433), Orlando Michael (80) and Ulric Harris (231). At that point, several other top seeds were bundled at two games apiece including Gafoor (2 and a positive of 32), Harris (2 and a negative of 143), Leon Belony (2 and a positive of 312) and Maurice Munro (2 and a negative of 50).
Harris then improved his chances for a podium spot in the first game after lunch, defeating Munro by a spread of 42, while Gafoor followed his act with a 106 spread drubbing over Julian Skeete. McDonald also won her inaugural post lunch game after defeating Belony by a close 47 spread margin.
The players then distinguished themselves in the penultimate game when Gafoor chalked up a very important win over McDonald to carry his tally to 4 games, the same as the eventual winner but the reigning champion held onto the lead by dint of a larger positive spread of 799 as against Gafoor’s 150. Harris also moved to 4 points after defeating Belony (25) but his chances of ascending the podium remained dim since his spread hovered at a negative seventy seven.
In the meantime, Munro, a virtual underdog was creeping into contention with 3 games and a positive spread of 117. He, however, flattered to deceive after conceding the final game to McDonald.
Gafoor finished the tournament with a close victory over Harris (26) while Chichester clawed back into contention with a come from behind victory over Grace Hercules (26) to claim the final podium spot. The respective winners took home lucrative prizes donated by the business community.
Meanwhile, the executives are mulling the dates for the national championships scheduled to get underway by October month end.
