Guyana face-off with Jamaica
By Sean Devers
Joint tournament leaders Guyana and Jamaica face-off from today at Bourda in the second round of this year’s regional three-day under-19 cricket competition while Barbados, also on top of the table with 12 points, battle Leeward Islands at DCC.
Trinidad and Tobago and defending Champions Windward Islands, who both suffered first round defeats, oppose each other at Providence in the other second round game today.
Guyana, hunting their first title at this level since 2007 in St Kitts hammered the Leewards by an innings and 27 runs at Providence 40 minutes before lunch on the final day in their opening game while Jamaica’s whose last title was achieved on home soil two years ago, defeated T&T by 10 wickets at Everest in their first match.
Today on what should be another slow and low track with assistance for the spinners Guyana should have a much tougher task than they did against the Islanders but their spin quartette of West Indies Under-19 player Amir Khan, Off-spinner Jomal Lafluer and left-arm spinners Anthony Adams and Gudakesh Motie should give them the edge.
In Skipper and West Indies Under-19 player Ronsford Beaton the Guyanese have the quickest bowler in the competition and if the versatile Clinton Pestano could offer support with the new ball the Jamaicans who scored 320 against T&T, could have to work hard for their runs.
The Guyanese, led by left-handed debutant Chanderpaul Hemraj who made 88 and West Indies Under-19 left-hander Kwame Crosse who scored 61, tallied 317-9 declared against the Leewards and both teams enter this round with their batsmen in early form.
Guyana’s biggest threat could be West Indies Under-19 left-hander John Campbell who followed up three tons against the USAUnder-19s in Florida earlier this month with a half-century against T&T while Teswayne Creary, the younger brother of former West Indies youth batsman Andre Creary, looked accomplished scoring 77.
Experienced all-rounder Donavon Nelson is also in form with the bat while opener Oshane Walters will be hoping to build a good foundation with fellow opener Campbell. James McDonald and Marquino Mindley will hope for early success with the new ball but leg-spinner Nelson and Ramon Senior could do the bulk of the bowling. Kevon Boodie seemed unlucky to be given out lbw against the Leewards and the Wicket-Keeper from the East Bank of Demerara will want to show why he is regarded as a player with the potential to score heavily at this level while if the elegant Dominique Rikhi, Lafluer, Crosse, Hemraj, Pestano and Adams all contribute Guyana whose total in the first round was their first 250 plus total since 2008, could again post a big total. Today’s match starts at 10:00hrs and admission is free.
