West Indies Captain Darren Sammy was warned by match Referee Jeff Crowe, while pacer Ravi Rampaul has been fined 10% of his match fee for showing dissent when he was given out caught behind in the first Test against India which ended here on Thursday.
Rampaul was fined for asking the umpire if the ball he succumbed to was a no-ball for height. Ishant Sharma had bowled two bouncers in the over before another delivery reared up and touched Rampaul’s gloves on its way to the Keeper.
The match referee deemed Rampaul to have breached clause 2.1.3 of the code which relates to “showing dissent at an umpire’s decision” even though TV replay show the ball was indeed above shoulder height.
Leg-Spinner Devendra Bishoo also dismissed Indian Skipper MS Dhoni with a ball which should have been a no-ball after the replays showed the bowler’s back foot touched the return crease.
Sammy, who made 25 from 11 balls, was warned for pointing to his forearm after a huge appeal for a close-in catch off the first delivery he faced from Harbhajan.
The appeal was turned down but Sammy was punished for conduct “contrary to the spirit of the game”. Both players accepted the ruling of the match referee and a hearing was not required.
“Just like India player Amit Mishra in the first innings, Ravi stood his ground and gestured to both the umpires on being given out. Darren, who was eventually given not out, immediately looked to influence the umpire as to where the ball struck him,” Crowe informed.
The second Test will be played from Tuesday in Barbados with West Indies one down in the three match series.
