Eighteen-year-old Dominic Rikki fell 10 short of a maiden century at this level and shared in a century partnership with Linden Austin who stoked an unbeaten 86 as Berbice ended the opening day of their three-day GTM under-19 cricket match against Essequibo at the Providence Stadium yesterday on 264-7.
The right-handed Rikki, who represented Guyana at the under-15 level in 2008 and at the under-19 level last year in St Lucia, looked compact on a slow track against an attack which included First-Class pacer Ronsford Beaton who represented the West Indies under-19 side against Young Australia this year in Dubai.
Rikki, who plays for the Rose Hall Youth and Sports Club in Berbice cricket, stroked 11 fours on the fast outfield and batted 177 minutes and faced 177 balls as he and the 17-year-old Austin, who plays for Young Warriors in Cumberland, joined forces with Berbice on 92-3.
Austin, who played at the Regional under-15 level in 2009, has so far struck 10 fours from the 147 balls he has faced in his unfinished 158-minute inning as Berbice ended the day in a good position after medium pacer Mark Tyrell, who has so far taken 2-22 from seven overs, removed both openers as Berbice slipped to 41-2. National under-19 left-arm spinner Anthony Adams
supported with 2-41 from 22 overs.Kandasammy Surujnarine (17) fell at 36-1 before Tyrell had Verepen Permaul, the younger brother of First-Class left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul, caught behind for 14.
By Lunch Rikki was unbeaten on 20 and Joemal LaFleur on five with Berbice on 62-2 from 25 overs.
After the interval, LaFleur was bowled by Adams for 22 at 92-3 before Rikki and Austin took their team to 162-3 by Tea with Rikki on 64 and Austin on 38.
But just when Rikki seemed set for his ton, he was removed by Herry Greene at 197-4 before Beaton bowled Romario ‘DeJonge’ Shepherd for one to leave Berbice on 198-5.
Adams trapped Kevin Ramdeen, the brother of national Opener Richard Ramdeen leg before for 10 at 220-6, while Vijay Surajpaul had Shaun Pereira LBW for 3 at 244.
Clinton Pestano (11*) and Austin then saw their team to the close without further loss.
