Marlon Samuels smashed a pugnacious double century as Brendon Nash’s team reached 395-8 in reply to Daren Sammy’s X1 310-5 declared when their two-day practice match ended at the DCC ground in Georgetown yesterday.
The 30-year-old Samuels clobbered 26 fours and 12 sixes on the small ground in his 213 from 207 minutes and 164 balls before he ‘retired out’ at 314-3 after racing to his double century in exciting fashion with a barrage of brutal boundaries.
Samuels, who played the last of his 29 Tests in Trinidad against Sri Lanka three years ago, stroked off-spinner Randy Lindore to the cover boundary to reach his century from 119 balls, 134 minutes with 14 fours and a six.
The Jamaican right-hander then changed gear to hit 10 more sixes and 12 fours in his second hundred which came from just 44 balls to rekindle memories of the second half of his whirlwind ODI 108 from 72 balls against India in 2002.
Samuels, who batted at number three in the order, added 189 for the second wicket with West Indies T20 batsman Guyanese Chris Barnwell after opener Darren Bravo (4) was leg before to a ball which kept low from Kemar Roach at 4-1.
Barnwell, who hit 12 fours and a six in an entertaining 81-ball 66, ‘retired out’ at 193-2 to make way for Samuels who has two Test centuries to his name, to add 121 with West Indies Vice-Captain Brendon Nash.
Samuels and Barnwell were severe on part-time off-spinner Lindore with Barnwell hitting the GDF bowler for a six and two fours before Samuels’ mighty six finished off an over which cost 22 runs.
After Barnwell ‘retired’ Samuels smashed Sammy for his ninth six to post the 100 partnership with Nash and then celebrated by hitting the next ball even further.
Samuels, who struggled to score quickly in the recent ODI series, tore into his Captain with two sixes and two fours off consecutive balls to race to 195 before two more consecutive sixes off Sammy took him to his double century from 163 balls before he also retired.
Sammy struck thrice with the score on 330 when he had Nash (31) caught behind by Carlton Baugh and removed West Indies under-19 left-hander Kwame Crosse and DCC batsman Jamal Hinckson for ducks off successive deliveries.
Roach returned to get rid of Ramnaresh Sarwan for 18 while Police teenage leg-spinner Parnell London removed Fidel Edwards for a duck leaving First Class Wicketkeeper Anthony Bramble unbeaten on 44 when the game ended.
Sammy finished with 3-64 and Roach 2-68 as they prepared for the first Test against Pakistan which starts on Thursday.
