Pepsi Hornets and Yamaha Caribs produced a riveting finale to bring the curtains down on the William Blackman-sponsored 15’s Rugby Competition on Saturday afternoon, at the National Park.
The encounter was played at a high intensity before an encouraging band of spectators that saw Hornets emerge with a hard fought 38-17 win to take the title.
National player Kevin McKenzie, whose suspension was lifted recently by the Guyana Rugby Football Union, opened the scoring when he ran for a try in the 15th minute of play.
Another national player Ryan Gonsalves netted the conversion to give Hornets a 7-0 lead.
Former Guyana and West Indies Captain Claudius Butts then pulled five points back for Caribs after producing a mesmerising run to end over the try-line as they trailed 5-7.
After his effort it was one-way traffic as McKenzie once again handed his team five more points when he cruised over to make it 12-5, before Gonsalves converted.
Gonsalves then finished off a wonderful play by ending over the backline for a try to make it 17-5.
Three minutes later it was Troy Bascom’s turn to get on the score-sheet as he used a clean pair of heels to outrun his markers for a try which was converted by Gonsalves as Hornets went to the break with a handy 26-5 advantage.
Butts added another for Caribs with a gliding run over the try-line that saw Theodore Henry find the target for the conversion to reduce the deficit, but still trailed 12-26.
Elwin Chase, another player with immense talent suddenly burst through the middle to add five more points to Hornets tally, before Gonsalves conversion as they led 33-12.
With time running out, the veteran Walter George salvaged some pride as he bullied his way past a host of tackles to finish a good play, but Caribs remained behind 17-33.
McKenzie then ended the contest with a strong run down the flank to score another try, before the final whistle sounded.
