Miller into Men’s final, Lowden / Persaud takes Over 45 Doubles title
Aruna Ramrattan scored a major upset when she upstaged number one seed and multiple times Women Champion Carol Humphrey in a three-set marathon as play in the MACORP Open Tennis Championships continued over the weekend, at the Pegasus Hardcourts.
Humphrey, who had been a major stumbling block for all the top juniors over the years could not reproduce the kind of dominance over her younger opponent and was eliminated.
The script seemed the same on Sunday, but Ramrattan used her superior ground-strokes to edge out Humphrey in the first set 7-5. Humphrey, however, quickly regrouped and took advantage over a relaxed Ramrattan by immediately going up a break in the second set at 2-0.
Ramrattan made a brief fight back by breaking Humphrey’s serve, but that was the only game she would win as Humphrey raced away to take the set 6-1.
The third set was a battle of nerves and the younger Ramrattan was able to dig deep and hold off the veteran Humphrey 6-4 to book a place in the final.
The final is a rematch of the Girl’s 18 and under championship game and Ramrattan will no doubt be going all out to try to exact revenge on Shawna Gentle, who defeated her in three sets.
Top seed in the Men’s Singles Jeremy Miller continued to wield his dominance as he turned back the challenge of 14 year-old Daniel Lopes in straight sets 6-1, 6-1 to book his place in the final.
Miller’s ability to keep the ball in play and pressure his opponents to make several good shots to win a point has made it easy for him in the tournament so far.
Doubles action saw Godfrey Lowden team up with Omar Persaud to claim the 45 years & over title against 55 & over champions Maxie Fox and Sakae Yamada in straight sets 6-4, 6-1.
After a close first set, Fox/Yamada could not maintain the intensity and meekly conceded the second to a determined and superior Lowden / Persaud. Berbician Lowden is a veteran doubles player and is on course for three titles.
The Men’s doubles matches saw a marathon three-hour battle as Sandeep Chand /Andre Lopes almost pulled off an upset over second seeded Leyland Leacock /Gilbert Barckoy. The match was off to a fast start as Chand / Lopes immediately had their opponents on the back foot with some aggressive tennis, being especially dominant at the net and wrapped up the opening stanza 6-4.
Leacock / Barckoy, however, slowed the game down to their liking, engaging in some lengthy rallies and eventually took the second set 6-4.
Chand / Lopes then turned the tempo up in the decider and raced to a 5-2 lead by breaking Leacock’s serve.
Barckoy, however, served brilliantly under pressure and the pair won the next three games to level at 5-5 and all the momentum in their favour.
Up 6-5, Barckoy served for the match and held to complete a memorable comeback win, ending the contest 7-5 and a spot in the final.
The team of Godfrey Lowden / Ezra Sue-Ho also had their hands full in the other Men’s Doubles match as they had to battle hard to overcome upcoming junior pair of Daniel Lopes/Gavin Lewis, who put up a spirited fight, before succumbing 6-3, 6-4.
