Recently elected President of the Demerara Volleyball Association (DVA) Dwayne Scott speaking with Kaieteur Sport last Friday disclosed that the entity’s main priority right now is to resuscitate the sport with the County.
Scott, a national hockey player said that among the DVA’s immediate goals are to organise activities that will cater for every level possible, in addition to placing specific emphasis of skill and administrative development that will ensure that Demerara maintain its dominance on the local scene. He informed that the long term plan is to provide the kind of support to the local governing body that could assist Guyana in getting back into the world ranking and that could only be realised through the collective effort of the players, administrators and corporate Guyana.
He conceded that both the DVA and the Guyana Volleyball Federation (GVF) must not bear the burden of improving the fortunes of the sport, but it must be a collaborative endeavour that includes the clubs as well.
Scott said that presently the new executive is working on initiatives to heighten activities within the affiliated communities connected to the DVA and that is expected to start very soon.
He added that with the full support promised by the GVF, lifting the image of the sport could happen at a faster rate. Among the activities planned that will commence shortly are a seeding tournament for First, Second and junior teams slated for April / May, while a School Outreach which a date is still to be confirmed is anticipated to follow.
A School Tournament in Demerara is also part of the DVA plans, but all these events are awaiting the blessings and ratification from the GVF.
Beach volleyball, coaching workshop and fund raising activities are also part of the DVA agenda.
