– Performed beyond expectations
By Rawle Welch
President of the Guyana Motor Racing & Sports Club (GMR&SC) Raj Boodhoo speaking with Kaieteur Sport yesterday reported that the entity was able to achieve all the goals that were set at the beginning of the year.
Boodhoo, who took over the reins of leadership of the club last October, said he is optimistic that the quantum leap that the sport made in 2010 will continue this year and could even be surpassed if all the projected plans are realised.
“This year could be considered an extremely successful one for motor racing which as you know culminated with us winning the Caribbean Team title and the announcement by President Bharrat Jagdeo at the presentation ceremony of the final leg of the Caribbean Series that Government will plug $40 million towards the resurfacing of the South Dakota Circuit,” Boodhoo mentioned.
He added that with those two notable achievements and the fact that were able to defeat Suriname in the Drag Racing and also win the Guyana Tourism Authority award the year no doubt must be summed up as an excellent one for the racing industry and the club.
Boodhoo said that with the club’s intent on making its base as family friendly as possible, they’ve improved the facility in every regard, informing that it now has a wonderful and fully stocked bar that offers a variety of food and beverages, the gym is fully manned to provide fitness sessions for its members, while the recent addition of the go-kart track caters not only for members, but everyone interested in having a drive or testing their skills.
He disclosed that this year will also see many more dimensions of the club’s plans on display in addition to what is already on offer.
Among the list of events are plans to stage a Drag Meet in Berbice and the revival the Dexterity racing and the Scavenger Hunt.
Commenting on the rise in popularity of the sport, Boodhoo said he believed that the current standing it is enjoying right now is due to astute leadership and strong commitment from the members, who all have one vision for the sport that is to see it among the leading disciplines on the sports agenda.
“I think we’ve been able to achieve that and I’m confident that with Guyana being able to win the Caribbean title and the encouraging performances of our drivers and riders the positive movement will continue,” Boodhoo felt.
He gave an example of the sport’s resurgence the domestic Meets which have become very popular among competitors and fans with the former now taking every event very serious and engaging in meticulous preparations.
“The guys are taking preparations more seriously now for every Meet and another encouraging sign is that even though we’re still unable to match the rest of the Caribbean in terms of sponsorship, the corporate community has been coming on board in a big way,” he stated.
He, however, agreed that lots of work still has to be done, while there is still need for more support from the corporate community, adding that for the club to bring the current track up to FIA standards, many more business entities will have to come on board and offer huge financial assistance.
He paid tribute to the local competitors who he felt did an excellent job in winning the regional title, adding that in his opinion, Guyana possesses some of the best drivers in the Caribbean and for that reason could dominate the sport for a long time.
Boodhoo extended thanks to President Jagdeo, GT&T, Carib Beer, Princess Hotel and all the other businesses that contributed to a successful year.
He also thanked the staff, officials and the fans for their support throughout the year and looked forward to a more fruitful year.
Meanwhile, Boodhoo indicated that the resurfacing of the Circuit had commenced a few weeks ago and nearly one third has been completed.
Dipcon Engineering Services Ltd is the contracting firm and work is anticipated to be completed within the first quarter of this year.
