Guyana’s representatives to the record-breaking 10th FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) held in Dubai at the Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Sports Complex closed out competition by winning respective heats.
The event which attracted the largest number of short course world championship athletes in history saw Ronaldo Rodrigues winning Heat one of eight in the 50 Breast to finish 67 of 92 athletes.
His Entry time was 33:11 with a Finish time of 32:14. According to Team Manager/Coach Joann Lowe, Rodrigues had no idea that he had won his heat and was extremely happy. Lowe reported that he had an excellent pullout on 25m and flashed a broad smile at the big screen when he realized that he had won.
The other events he competed in on the penultimate day are as follows: 100 IM – Finish time 1.07:76 Heat finish 8 of 8, Final finish 70 of 83. 100 Free – Entry time 1.00:02 Finish time 57:96, 50m 27:09, Final finish 102 of 125.
Britany van Lange swam her way to victory in Heat one of eight in the 50 Free. She had an entry time of 29:91 and a Finish time of 28:58 with a Final finish 70 of 101.
van Lange flashed her amazing smile on the big screen as she realised that she won her heat, reported Manager/Coach Lowe.
In the 50m back, van Lange recorded a finish time of 36:91 in Heat 8 of 8 for a Final finish 67 of 73. The final day was another good one for van Lange in the 200m free. Her entry time was 2.20:32 Finish time 2.15:77. She lead the heat all the way to the 125m mark but was overtaken at the wall at 175m to finish 2nd the heat.
Meanwhile, Ryan Lochte’s six gold medals at these Championships have seen him surpass the all-time short course world championship medal record of Swedish powerhouse Therese Alshammar. The double world record-breaking star was named best male of the championships during the closing ceremony while Spain’s Mireia Belmonte Garcia was the best female athlete with three golds and one silver.
Lochte won gold in the 200m freestyle, 200m individual medley, 400m individual medley, 100m individual medley, 200m backstroke and 4x100m medley relay. His all-time tally now stands at 21, four ahead of Alshammar, who claimed gold and silver at the Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Sports Complex this past week. The US team topped the medal table, with 25 in total, 12 golds, six silver and seven bronze. One person who significantly added to the haul was Rebecca Soni who claimed three golds in three championship records, winning the 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke treble in the process.
The other two golds came courtesy of Kathryn Hoff, who claimed the women’s 400m freestyle gold and Natalie Coughlin who finished first in the women’s 100m backstroke.
Athletes at the 10th FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) broke 61 championship records during the five-day meet and four world records.
