The District of Columbia Metro Organisation (DCMCO) 15-over round-hand knockout countrywide Softball cricket Tournament organised by the Guyana Softball League in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport quarterfinals are set for this weekend from 09:00hrs at the DDC ground.
The quarterfinals will be played today while the semis and finals are scheduled for tomorrow at the same venue and this weekend’s action culminates one month of keen competition and eight of the best teams have qualified for this stage and the organizers have indicated a packed programme for the two days.
The teams who have qualified are Essequibo winner – Adventure sports Club; Essequibo Islands – Leguan Super stars; West Demerara – Wolf’s Warriors; East Bank – Farm XI; Linden – South Star XI; Berbice – Memorex XI; East Coast Demerara – Farmers XI and Georgetown winner – Regal XI.
The top prize is $150,000 and a beautiful trophy while other prizes include Runner up – $75,000 + trophy; Most Valuable Player – $20,000 + trophy; Man of the Match (final) $10,000; Best Batsman (tournament) – $10,000; Best Bowler – $10,000; Region Finalist – Trophy.
Several exciting players should be on show with Regal XI depending on Richard Latiff, Shaheed Gittens, Wasim Haslim and Lakeram Narine while Tyrone Sanasie and Troy Kippins will lead the bowling.
Farm XI’s batting will feature Patrick Khan and Abdool Sadiek while Khalid Khan should spearhead their bowling.
Wolf’s Warriors will hope that Ameer Nizamuddin, Skipper Amrit Jairam and Azad Azeez get good scores while Mandolall Doodnarine will need to perform with the ball.
Memorex XI will depend on David Looknauth and Gurdat Singh with the bat and Sikander Singh with the ball while Farmers XI’s Davendra Persaud batting will be needed while Delon Wills will have to shine with the ball.
Leguan Super Stars’ key player is Satnarine Chattan while South Star XI’s batting should come from Jason Allicock and Kishon Basdeo with Kevin Samuels expected to take care of the bowling.
Adventure SC will want Shaun Grosnar to get among the runs while Jagdesh Sharma is expected to shine with the ball.
In addition to the semis and final on Sunday there will be a female exhibition match between Regal Capoey of Essequibo, who have Anika Edwards and skipper Debra Allicock in their lineup. They face Mahaica Creek Princesses who are an exciting bunch and have the talent of Shondelle Duke and her sister Simone in their line-up.
There will be lots to eat and drink and some of the best softball action is anticipated. Members of the District of Columbia Cricket Organization of New York USA will be present while Guyana’s Director of Sports Neil Kumar and the country’s Sports Minister Dr Frank Anthony are expected to witness tomorrow’s final.
According to the organisers, Dr Anthony will address the gathering after tomorrow’s final.
