All Guyana urged to come out and see four-time Regional champs
Three of the overseas-based national rugby players all agreed that playing at the Guyana National Stadium in trials starting today and ending tomorrow is indeed a fillip for the sport both in terms of producing a higher standard of play and giving a wider cross section of the sporting community the opportunity to see the four-time regional champions at play.
The three which included Richard Staglon, Ronald Mayers, both of whom are based in Trinidad and Tobago and Ireland-based Kevin McKenzie who’re home to contest for spots on the national team to compete in the CAC Games and NACRA Sevens Championships, believe it is a step in the right direction for the team to prepare at the Stadium which is by far a more accommodating and player friendly facility that could produce a higher quality of play.
Staglon speaking with Kaieteur Sport said that the world-class venue should raise the level of performance among the players since it is conducive for better handling of the ball and he felt that it will definitely raise the intensity of the game.
The trials which forms part of the plan by the Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) to identify the final selection of the national team to participate in the two international competitions, is expected to lift the standard of play as players vie to make the final cut which will be named tomorrow.
According to Staglon, the rivalry to make the final composition of the squad will be intense; adding that the current contingent of 19 players will be reduced tom 12 and any of those 7 that failed to make the team could easily make the starting unit.
“You can see right away that there is no room for mistakes because if you do there is another player waiting to take your place,” Staglon said.
Another cause for all to take the trials seriously is that the team that will be selected tomorrow is not necessarily the one that will contest the NACRA Tournament where a new team will be selected.
Meanwhile, when Kaieteur Sport visited the Stadium, it was all business as workers were seen attempting to install the goal posts for today’s activity.
Among those who were seen at the facility was President of the Union Christopher ‘Kit’ Nascimento, Col. John Lewis and other influential members of the Organising Committee.
Starting time for the trials is 13:00 hrs and all Guyanese are asked to come out ad witness the four-time regional champions display their skills which has made them into the most feared team in the Caribbean.
