Guyana ladies team getting ready for St Vincent
By Sean Devers
The 2nd half of the year is ram-packed with activity for Guyana’s cricketers since apart from this country’s 20/20 men’s side going into battle from July 22 in Barbados, the national under-19 side will participate in the Regional three-day and one-day tournaments in St Lucia from July 6 to August 5 and the Guyana female team will travel to St Vincent for the Regional women’s competition from August 10-19.
These were among a number of disclosers made yesterday by the President of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) as his executive met the media at the GCB secretariat.
The Guyana under-19 side, hunting their first Regional title since Steven Jacobs led them to back-to-back three-day championships in 2007 in Guyana and 2008 in St Kitts, will begin a 3-week encampment at the Chetram Singh’s Centre of Excellence at LBI from June 15 to July 4 before departing Guyana on July 6 for their opening match against the Leeward Islands from July 8.
The squad, which is presently preparing for the competition with weekend encampments, will be trimmed to 14 on June 15 and emphasis will be played on the mental conditioning of the teenagers during their encampment period.
Singh said he is hoping for improved weather to facilitate practice matches for the team which has been mainly working on their fitness during the weekend activities.
While in the past the May/June rainy season has severely affected preparations for Regional under-19 tournaments, the availability of the indoor practice facility at LBI is one of the best things to happen for the preparation of local teams and the players had their first batting and bowling session at the venue last weekend.
Former Guyana First-Class batsman Hubern Evans is the Coach while former GCB Vice-President Alvin Johnson is the Manager.
Guyana performed poorly in both the three-day and one-day tournaments in Jamaica last year after winning a record 6 three-day titles from 1992-1997.
This country has never won a one-day regional under-19 title.
Guyana face defending champions Jamaica from July 12-14 in their 2nd match before battling the Windward Islands from July 16-18. Guyana then oppose Barbados from July 20-22 before taking on Trinidad and Tobago in their final round 3-day game from July 24-26. The South Americans come up against the Leewards in their opening 50-overs match on July 29 and then play the Windwards (July 31), Barbados (August 1), Jamaica (August 3) and T&T (August 4).
Meanwhile, a 27-member squad, which was selected after the Women’s Inter-County competition, is presently in training for the Women’s competition in St Vincent and Chairman of the National selectors Claude Raphael informed that the 14 member touring party should be named after two practice matches are held on July 3 & 4.
Berbicians Shamaine Campbell and Tremayne Smartt, who were both members of the West Indies team which lost to New Zealand in the Women’s 20/20 World Cup semi-finals in St Lucia last month, are among the girls preparing to give Guyana its first regional female title. Trinidad and Tobago won last year’s tournament which was played in Guyana.
Guyana oppose T&T on August 12 in their first match before facing Grenada (August 13) and St Vincent (August 15).
The play-offs and semi-finals are set for August 16 with the finals and 3rd place play-off will take play on August 18.
