Even as local amateur boxers prepare for several international engagements, coach of the Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF), Sebert Blake and recently identified national coach, Wencel Thomas have combined their efforts to organize a series of amateur boxing cards that would provide valuable activity for them.
The first edition of the tournament, slated for Sunday May 16 at the Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis Boxing Gym (ALBG), would be held in honour of Woman International Boxing Association (WIBA) bantamweight champion, Shondell Alfred.
The other dates targeted for competition are June 20, July 18, September 12, October 10 and November 14 while several other gyms have been identified to host the tournament.
Consequently, the organizers are also planning to stage the final edition of the tournament at an open air venue.
Blake disclosed that the reason for spreading the tournament to different locations is to create the level of awareness necessary for the advancement of the sport.
The boxers would compete in two categories. The first would comprise schoolboys between 8-14 years while the second involves lads between 15 and 16 years old.
The weigh in and medical examination of the boxers would be held the day prior to the tournament at the ALBG starting at 15:00hrs.
Boxers from outlying areas such as Berbice, Essequibo and Berbice among others are reminded that their weigh in ceremony takes place on the same day but at 15:00hrs.
This is to facilitate their travel to Georgetown. All referees and judges are asked to take note.
