Its crunch time and the wheat will be separated from the chaff as four of the top teams competing for top honours in the Mayor’s Cup Football Championships clash for semi-finals places in two pulsating quarter-final matches commencing at 18:00hrs tonight.
In the first encounter the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) oppose Uprising while the nightcap brings together Alpha United and Riddim Squad. Both teams will field an imposing lineup and each would feel confident of advancing to the next stage of the tournament.
The soldiers would be putting their faith in the hands, or should that be on the feet, of Stellon David who has delivered the goods in the past. Add the input of Sheik Kamal, Trevor Lythcott and Royan Morrison and the pundits would want to wager heavily on the green clad bunch. But wait, Uprising also come to the field with high ambitions and a strong squad to realize those ambitions. Just mention such names as Rensford Coleridge, Daniel Favourite, Omali Nassy and Terrence Lewis and even the diehard pundit would be nurturing reservations on a clear cut winner. Fans would not want to miss any of this action.
The Uprising Squad entered this year’s championships with the chance of a snowball in hell. Known for its ability to create unlikely upsets, the team, led by a double from Rensford ‘Baba’ Coleridge, once again pulled the proverbial rabbit out of the hat to dish out a 2-0 beating to Camptown FC. Since then the tournament had experienced fluctuating fortunes due to the inclement weather.
Now that the weather has smiled on the promoters and now that the players of both teams have had more time to hone their skills, football buffs can look forward to another classic encounter.
Alpha United would enter the fray with high hopes of ‘Hammering’ the opposition. They will look to the talents of Howard Lowe, Anthony Abrams, Dwight Peters, Dwayne Jacobs and Kelvin McKenzie. However, despite its strong defensive and attacking proclivities, this team has lapsed in the past after failing in the ball distribution area. This kind of faux pas can very well spell their doom.
Their opponents, known giant killers, Riddim Squad feature several key players who will look for the upset. Among them are the Hope clan, Sceyon, Sheldon, Sherwin and Steffon along with Llyton Ramsey and Mark Gilkes.
Apart from the lucrative incentives of $500,000, $200,000, $100,000 and $50,000 for the first to fourth place finishers respectively the players would vie for other prizes starting with the player to score the most goals. That player receives a cell phone from Digicel and a bed compliments of AH&L Kissoon Ltd. The Most Valuable Player carts off a television set compliments of Keishar’s.
The organizers are especially grateful for the input of the corporate community and wish to extend deep gratitude for such chivalry. These companies include Digicel, Macorp, Guyana Beverage Company Ltd (Busta), Banks DIH Ltd, GT&T, Beepat and Sons, Bakewell, Gold Target, Nazar Mohamed, Keishar’s, Giftland Office Max and DDL.
