Whip Barbados by 10 wkts to set up decider against T&T today
With all the controversy surrounding Guyana’s cricket and the poor performances on the field by recent national teams, the Guyana under-15 side continued to keep the Golden Arrow Head flying proudly in Trinidad with their 4th consecutive win in this year’s Regional 50-over under-15 cricket competition.
The Guyanese colts, led by level-headed Rose Hall Town’s all-rounder Shawn Pereira, beat Barbados by 10 wickets yesterday in their rain-interrupted penultimate match in the six–team competition to head into today’s final round as the only unbeaten team.
Host Trinidad and Tobago, suffered their first loss in the competition yesterday when they were crushed by 81 runs and only a win today against Guyana could deny the Guyanese the title.
With the rains finally coming in the twin-Island Republic after months of drought, today’s game can also be affected by the weather and if the match is washed out Guyana will take their first title at this level after wining back-to-back titles in 1998 and 1999.
Yesterday Barbados were restricted to 155-8 off their allotted 50 overs in overcast conditions on a slow Munroe Road pitch before a heavy shower during the lunch break, delayed the start of the Guyana reply.
When play eventually resumed at 15:55hrs Guyana were set a revised target of 74 from 24 overs and another solid opening partnership between the highly talented Brian Sattaur (33*) and Romario De Jonge (23*) saw the South Americans to victory from 17 overs.
This was the second consecutive unfinished half-century opening partnership between Lusignan left-hander Sattaur and Berbician DeJonge.
The pair had helped Guyana to an emphatic 10-wicket win against the Leewards on Thursday.
Pereira, whose father is a Pastor in Corentyne, Berbice, will lead his team against the home team on Holy Sunday today with plenty of confidence as they eye their 3rd title at this level since Regional under-15 cricket was first played in 1996.
Jonathan Drakes (24), Jameel Stuart (24), Jerome Jones (18*), Shane Proverbs (17), Aaron Jones (14), Dario Boyce (13) and Tevyn Walcott (11) all got into double figures but could not carry on as pint-size left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie Kanhai, in his 4th year at this level, took 2-23 from 10 overs and the Man-of-the-Match award.
Skipper Perreira supported with 2-31 with his leg-spin after the Bajans were off to a 32-run opening stand from Proverbs and Boyce as Vice-Captain and left-arm spinner Ricardo Adams conceded 19 runs from his three overs after being asked to share the new ball with DeJonge.
The Guyanese then knocked off the runs in commanding fashion to set up the virtual final against the hosts today in the final round. The Guyanese are expected home tomorrow.
The Windwards beat the Leewards in the other match played yesterday.
