(Kaieteur News) – An armed robbery suspect was shot and killed Wednesday night following an exchange of gunfire with a police rank at the People’s Choice supermarket on Mandela Avenue, law enforcement officials confirmed.
The incident occurred at approximately 20:40h on Wednesday.
Preliminary investigations revealed that three males entered the business establishment, where one of the men, who was armed with a handgun, held two unarmed security guards at gunpoint and ordered them to lie on the ground.
The targeted heist was interrupted when a police rank on mobile patrol observed the unfolding crime. The officer stopped the patrol vehicle and approached the suspects inside the supermarket.
“The armed suspect allegedly discharged a round in the direction of the police rank, who returned fire with his service pistol. The suspects then ran out of the supermarket in different directions. The armed suspect subsequently fell into a nearby drain on Mandela Avenue, “the Guyana Police Force said in a statement”.
. He was later examined by a doctor on duty and pronounced dead. Crime scene detectives processed the scene and recovered a .38 revolver, loaded with three live rounds, alongside several spent shells.
